Came across this figured I would share the sailing scene from the Thomas Crown Affair
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVXoqy2Bo0Q
I also found this about the boats....but I dont know it indicates they sailed these on the barnaget bay. Being a sailor on the bay I know that in or outside of the 100 ft wide channel it is dicey to say the least, monohulls have a hard time that draw 4 or 5 ft, so I don't know about racing around with those big daggerboards

The catamaran that Thomas Crown is seen racing in Long Island Sound is a D-Type Catamaran. The earliest Class D catamarans were designed and built by individual amateur designers as early as 1963. Richard Karcher, Watchung, NJ built either USD#1 or #2 at the time. His "D" boats were sailed on Barnegat Bay in New Jersey for several years on an experimental basis. Richard also designed and manufactured several other types limited production catamarans at the time, one of which was considered as the official Olympic Class Catamaran and participated in the trial in England. Due to the vast amount of power that this design represented, no "production" versions were ever produced and interest and research into this Class waned. Years later in the 1980s interest in this extremely fast and highly unstable yacht design was revived by California based aeronautical engineers who tried to break inshore multi-hull speed records. Today there are only a handful of them left in the world.
Maybe they were experimenting ripping off the boards and rudders??

While we are looking at cats in the media I am curious if anyone knows these guys or if they landed this launch in tact and still on the boat!

The Sunkist commercial has got to be the same guys (can't recall their names, but Hobie 16 & 18 World Champs back when they had 300 boats at a regatta.) who made the Hobie promo film "Sharing the Wind, A Moments Glory".
Sharing the wind featured amazing shots of a Hobie 18 jumping off the big breaks in Hawaii and doing stunts like pyramid trapping and daggerboard water skiing. Rumor was always that they busted up several boats making the film, but I think that was just propaganda spread by Prindle sailors.

That's the yellow boat which is a D-Class, the white boat (Pierce Brosnan's boat) with Randy Smyth at helm was a Prosail Formula 40. Prosail was the same group that ran the professional series for the Hobie 21SE (21x10) from about 1988-1990.
I don't think giant wings were used for the Prosail racing, Randy Smyth was experimenting with big wings and racks and used a radical racked cat (I believe a Nacra 6.0) in the Worrell 1000.
Good quality video of the Thomas Crown sailing

I know....I saw that and figured it takes four people to sail it so $35 K/ 4 = $8750 ea..... cheaper than a new H16!
Does it come with a tilt trailer?
Actually when you think about it, you could probably start a cool business in say Miami or some other big beach community. Get some tourists aboard it would be an exciting alternative to a sunset cruise. -

That really is pretty cheap for a boat like that, a similar size brand new Reynolds 33 is north of $150,000 ready to sail.
But there is an "end of summer" sale for sail away package for $125,000!!
http://www.r33.com/en/pricing/rs33.asp
By the way, there is a R33 prowling the Fort Walton Beach area and will probably show up for the Juana Good Time Regatta, so Steve's Mac 36 will have some competition after all.

Actually the remake, which we saw at the movies; that was one of my favorite scenes. In the original "Thomas Crown Affair" with Steve McQueen (which we rented after we saw the remake) he was racing cars, I believe, and everyone smoked.
trivia question: theme song from the original film?? -

The ending of the first one was better...Thomas Crown wasn't a chump like they made him in the second one.
Sinner man by nina simone was the song at the end of the second when they put back the painting...that was a good one.
Dont remember the first one.

The first one was "windmills of your mind". Carol would dispute me on this, but I think it's easier to make Pierce Brosnan into a chump than Steve McQueen. -

Yeah, Steve McQueen is about a cool as you can get...
When Shavawn (GF) sees Pierce Bronson her eyes roll back into her head and her mouth opens, drool comes out ...HAHA
