Is this Hobie 16 worth getting?  Bottom

  • I'm looking to buy an H16 and I've found this one that seemed to be in great shape until I saw detailed pictures of some wear and tear that it has. I'd like to know if they are minor stuff that could easily be repaired or if I should stay away from it. Please give me your opinion!

What I like about this one is that it's a 1999 boat, not as old as others that I've seen. I have no problem spending some money getting it fixed just as long as the issues are not too bad.

I was told that the hulls have sections where the coating is worn out but the fiberglass is still strong and no fibers showing.

The asking price is $4300 but he has said he'll lower the price now that he looked under the hulls and found the issues. I think I would not pay more than $3500... What do you guys think? Does the damage to the hulls make it not worth it?

    Thanks in advance!

  • If that's the extent of the issues which is normal wear, it's a steal at $3,500 IMO.

  • i agree with bacho...i've repaired worse and they're still sailing. plus it looks like it comes with original epo rudders which are a huge improvement over factory, and getting harder to find. definitely a good buy. buy it and have a blast.

  • those "repairs" look like all they need is a little bit of gel-coat (maybe some cloth on the bigger chunks) but they look like small cosmetic issues and wear
  • That is just normal wear and tear, I see decades of sailing left on that boat

  • I agree with everyone else. Bottoms like that are pretty much par for the course for a used boat. It's a pretty easy job to fix that up. The original EPO's can be refinished to like new condition. Plus it looks like he has a bunch of extras: cat trax with cradles, deluxe sail bag, spare parts box.

  • Not a bad buy at all. We've got one local here, older hulls newer everything else + spin for not much morehttps://grandrapids.craig….org/boa/4393194920.html. At 3500 I thinks its very fair. H16s are tanks, small gelcoat damage it common and not usually structural. But I've seen the old school guys go out of their way to repair that stuff at regattas because it slows you down, not much but a half knot gained or lost over the other guy can make a difference.
Anyways, do it and you have a an hour or marine tex repair, no sweat. Have fun.

  • Even at 4K it is a good newer boat with a ton of extras. I have never owned a cat with hulls in that good a shape. JMHO, YMMV, Ricardo.
