I think the old style halyard would be your best bet. Not sure if it
would work, but I would think so.

I played around with reefing the main on a H16, thinking it would
increase the performance of the boat in high wind. I may have seen a
very slight positive effect on a reach, but to weather the boat was a
    dog.

This was with an all aluminum mast and the old halyard. I don't
recall where the head of the main was when reefed, but common wisdom
says it should be above the hounds. That being the case, with a
comptip the head of your main is going to be held by a plastic luff
groove. That may be a problem. If it pulls free from there, you are
going to have a mess with your sail potentially jammed. Not a good
situation in conditions that had you reef the sail in the first place.

I do take the H18 to the channel islands, and had a reef point
installed for that purpose. While I came up with an innovative, albeit
somewhat complicated, way to reef the main on THAT boat, I have never
reefed the H16 main since my experiment. In high winds, I find the
best way to keep the H16 depowered is lots of downhaul, travelling
out, then sheeting in as much as you can. Otherwise, I don't take that
boat as far out as I take the H18.

Finally, I don't agree that you would not use a lot of downhaul with a
reefed main. Maybe I am missing something there.
