You might use a halyard extension made out of stainless steel cable and attach
that between your current halyard and the top of your sail. You can buy the
parts and tools and make it yourself or order a custom length cable from
Murrays.com. Note that this will reduce the high voltage insulating performance
of your comptip. A low stretch rope may also work. I have not tried this but
came up with the idea when thinking of ways to reef the main on my former Hobie 16.
You should not sail without hooking your halyard at the top. That will double
the downward stress on your mast and risk bending or breaking your mast.
Another way to depower is to put a roller furling kit on your jib.
Let my emphasize what Bill said about traveling out. If you can't sheet in all
the way, then you need to travel out your main. You will be amazed at how much
more control you have over the power. Let me explain why. When your sail is
loose, it is like a big parachute catching a lot of air. You have to release a
lot of rope to dump a little air. If you travel out and sheet in, your sail will
be much flatter. You dump a little rope to dump a lot of air.
