Spyderco Snap-It 4 Inch Zytel with Polymer Interframe |
A while back on the Hobie mailing list rescue knives were discussed. It impressed me since I have had nightmares of capsizing and having me or my crew caught in lines. So I went looking for one that I could carry with me. I also wanted one that would serve as a general knife as I cut and trimmed things during boat setup and repair. |
The Spyderco Snap-It in Red Serrated and Plain Black |
I did a search on the Internet and found http://www.knifecenter.com. They listed several Spyderco brand knives along with other popular brands. I liked the Snap-It because it didn't just have a clip on the handle, but a large snap ring to secure it to my life jacket. It comes in a plain edge black handle; serrated blade black handle; and red serrated. The cost is $70 retail and $39.95 through Knifecenter. I chose the serrated blade thinking that it would slice through lines easier. The only serrated Snap-It that Knifecenter had in stock at the time was black. Shipping through Knifecenter (out of MD) was $5 UPS to anywhere in the US. The knife slices line like nothing I have experienced. I am used to having a new utility knife in my toolbox to cut line. I used to saw through the line taking about 30 seconds to gnaw through, jeopardizing digits and anything else in the vicinity. The Snap-It takes one easy swipe to cut even 1/2" line. The Snap-It has a secure locking blade that has a very positive click to it. The snap mechanism is more robust than I imagined and takes some effort to pull back and release the knife from my life jacket. The hole in the blade is used to easily open the knife (even one handed with your thumb in the hole) and rotates to line up with the eye of the snap ring when fully opened. The metal is all stainless. Quality seems very good. From what I can tell, Spyderco is a US company, but this particular knife (at least the blade) was made in Taiwan. The Snap-It comes with a one-year warranty. About the only drawback to the knife is that it is a little easier to start opening than I would like. I'm sure it won't open on its own, but it makes me a little nervous. Overall, I really like the knife, would recommend it to others, and would buy one again. Gary Willcox memphis@one.net |
