Vol 1 - Issue 6 February 1997

Bill Mattson

Things looked a bit shaky for this month, but then the stories started coming in. I'd like to thank each and every one of you who have sent submissions to this site for publication. I wish I could thank you in the way of a check, but we make just enough to pay the site providers. If this project ever makes any money, though, I do plan on getting a snail mail address from each person on my long list of writers.

The letters section is bit lengthy this month, as I advised each contributor to send me copies of correspondence regarding their stories. I feel this adds value, as past issues can be clarified in the letters section.

This month, I "reverse engineer" a home built sailbox that has given me years of convenience. I liked it so much that, before selling my Hobie 14, I moved it to the trailer of my new Hobie 16. It appears that there are a few folks thinking about this project on the Hobie Mailing List. I hope they, and others with similar ambition, find this article useful.

Just getting into the sport of cat sailing? Can't decide between a Hobie or a Prindle or a Nacra? Mark Michealsen explains the differences and helps you decide on the boat that's right for you. While On The Wire caters primarily to the sailors of Hobie Cats, this is primarily due to our limited resources. Some of our readers are interested in the other brands of boats, so we will occasionally try and include some articles on those. Heck, we even ran a picture of a Prindle on our cover in November. (Okay... So it was a wrecked prindle.)

Well it's February now...and getting one month closer to sailing regularly. Come the Summer, we're gonna try and spend lots of time on "AmpuCat". (Gotta make up for some lost sailing last Summer.)

This month we've got some information on a home-made cat box we built. This is really timely, as the HobieList is hot with sail box ideas right now. This one may not be the best, but I guarantee it's one of the strongest.

For those of you who are currently sailing, the best of wind's for you. For those who's boats are covered with snow, we'll try and keep your interest's alive here, while you thaw out. Happy reading.

ps:
Bill and I plan to take a tour of the Hobie factory in the near future, so look for an in-depth article soon on how these great boats are made. And, if you haven't ordered your Hobie 1997 calendar yet, get on the stick! Your now one month down on some great HobieCat shots.

You may have an attitude problem! This claim has less to do with your mental state and more to do with the position of your hulls. Check out Tami Shelton's article on getting your hulls to slice through the water a bit more efficiently.

We have readers worldwide, so it's summer for some and winter for others. A lot of folks in the U.S. are still stuck in winter weather. Check out our new online books section, as well as another fine review by William Wallick.

What the heck are horses doing on the cover? I've been wanting to run this cover for a while, but like to keep the cover more applicable to a feature story. In this case, the horses next to the Hobie make a better cover than a sailbox. Check out the features section for details on the day we were visited by deputies on horseback.

Enjoy the issue, and remember that we are always looking for content. If you would like your story to appear in our pages, drop us a line. We are getting some great stuff. This is your site, so keep 'em coming!

Sail fast, sail safe,
