If this is an internal halyard (one that is inside the sail track on the mast)take the foot or bottom of the sail out of the track, uncoil the main halyard, pull the halyard so that the ring will raise up higher than the hook and then WITHOUT RELEASING ANY PRESSURE rotate the mast approx 90 degrees grab the bottom of the sail, do not allow the mast to move, pull down on the mainsail and release the halyard about the same time while holding the mast over. If you allow the mast to go back, or let off on the halyard, more than likely it will fall back on the hook. Just remember that the ring must be above the hook, the mast rotated, and pressure kept on the halyard before you start to pull down the main.
