Rumors of oil didn't stop the Fourth of July running of the Rags to Riches Hobie 16 regatta. Pretty cool, lots of boats, colorful sails, and not a spinnaker in sight.
This video also shows how the lake at Grayton (by the Red Bar) sometimes connects with the Gulf, I've never seen it like that, has always been a dune between the lake and Gulf when I was there.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QQx5ZqDX2I
Actually I've found out the answer to hw long it takes to wear away not just a little gelcoat but glass as well.
3 years.
Damon, were you there?
My boat was the one with all white sails, no numbers, and all the flags, third to start.
I was hoping this was a different video of the start showing exactly what happened at the start.
I had a great start. while I was turned around locking down my rudders, apparently the guy next to me got pushed sideways by a wave ending up directly in front of me. I ended up broadsiding him.
I couldn't tell if I had any damage to my starboard hull where I hit. Race started on a port tack. after rounding the first buoy onto a starboard tack my boat got slower and slower. When we hit a hole in the wind and came to a stop I started sinking backwards. I just knew I was taking on water most likely from the crash and ended up coming back to the beach before making the second buoy.
While I had no significant damage where I hit I found that my hulls had worn much further than the superficial gelcoat and have worn through quite deep into the glass. They're trashed!
I filled up the hull with water today while on the trailer and watched water seep out the worn spots.
