Roll Call for Juana Good Time Regatta

Who will be there? This is my favorite event of the year and I'm hoping everyone will make it a point of getting there after all the oil problems in other locations this summer.

Who's In?

You should beat the crap out of the cruising cats that normally show up. For those that haven't been to the Juana Good Time Regatta, the big cat cruisers traditionally start their race with the skippers at the bar, bell rings, everyone does a shot, then the skippers run (slowly) to their waiting boats.

The big boats usually start a 1/2 hour or so before the beachcats and make for great obstructions down the race course. icon_lol

Absolutely, very friendly laid back atmosphere.

As Yoda would say "the social, it is strong in this one".

For more pictures than you will have time to look at from past years.

Like I said before:
"You should beat the crap out of the cruising cats that normally show up."

However, if you can sail your 36 to that 69.1 number I'll buy you a discounted Corona! I don't see a barbeque grill hanging from your stern, but big boats tend to collect things.

Also at Juana's all big boats are required to carry at least 3 competitors for the prestigious "Best Breast" perpetual trophy, and crew like that distracts from competitive sailing.

More than likely, they will probably run the Macgregor 36 with the beachcats. They had always put Bruce (Stiletto 23) with the beachcats in past years. Different RC this year so he might end up with the cruisers, which would be the proper place for him. I don't think the cruisers (Gemini's) will want him with them, and since a cruiser is the host, well, we'll see . . .
The Stiletto was always causing wrecks during the Sunday buoy races.

Really thinking about going. Couple questions...

Where is a good place to stay?

I dont have CatTrax is that a problem with unloading?

Can we keep the boats on the beach mast up for the weekend?

Most people do use beach wheels to get onto the beach, but there is also a public ramp. I've done it both ways. There will be plenty of people to borrow wheels from.

Well, I got to confess...since Judy and I got the P19 with the 4-way jib control tramp space has gotten
crowded. So we have an inflatable mattress now...self inflating of course ;)
I will be coming with my older son, our first regatta. Hotel, tent or boat for sleeping? Is there camping available around? Do most stay in a hotel?

Thanks.

The brothers from Ohio will be there. My son is also coming with us and bringing his Hobie 16, we are stacking 2 of the boats, i hope that works out ok. That will make 3 boats in the TepeRacing stable.... kinda intimidating. I look forward to seeing everyone from last year as well as meeting new friends!

Why just spectate? There will probably be other Getaways and also some rental Waves that you can kick around. icon_cool

but if you do decide not to race you can still score free and discounted beer, as well as dinner and a t-shirt by registering as a non-racer for $35.

I think the hull integrity was compromised beforehand. Ron had just gotten some work done on one of the hulls where the trailor roller had put a dent in the bottom. That bad part was it broke about a minute from the finish line. After he had been hard sailing for a good hour. Helping him take it apart wasn't the most fun either

Sad, very sad...I have an 84 that I am going to beef up in the off season and put new the new brackets on. Hoping not to get that kind of explosion before I fix it up. I guess he parted out the boat after that??

O man Im glad you got fished out. I guess your crew was pretty freaked out. I was dragged about 50 yards holding on the tail end of the main sheet, all the while tightening the main so she would sail faster! Did a horizontal rope climb to the back of the boat. Was too worn out to get back on the boat. Power boater came by and asked if I needed help!! uh - yes.

So they dragged me and my boat over to the nearest shore...had a blast that day but it was humbling too.

Wow! Crazy French Canadians crashing their boats. icon_lol

Actually that reminds me of 2002 Juana Good Time Regatta that featured full carnage and was one of my first regattas.

Read my newbie account at
http://thebeachcats.com/Article30.html

I don't know about you guys but I like reading sailors first-person accounts like this, I wish more members would submit stories, you can be a star on the front page of TheBeachcats.com!

Also I'm going to quote the last paragraph of that story because it is still how I feel about beachcat regattas these years later.

"If your still with me this long I'll make a pitch for regattas everywhere. Whether or not you consider yourself a "racer", try attending a weekend event like this. Beachcat sailors are great people and the local organizers go out of their way to welcome newcomers. It's also about the cheapest sports participation you can do, most regatta fees are < 50 dollars for the weekend and include some food/drinks/t-shirts, many regattas have camping available near the site, or arrangements for reduced rate lodging. If you commit to sailing in a regatta, you will meet lots of great new friends and you will sail in locations and conditions you might not have tried before. "

I will be in late. Depends on how I feel when I get there. I slept on the boat under a tarp with it raining last year. Bringing the pop up this year. Maybe just set it up over the boat and crash.

Awesome weekend, lets hear your stories!

Much better wind than predicted, nearly too much for me by the third race on Sunday. When I get caught up with work today (just got back last night) I'll tell about falling backwards off the wing on the first upwind leg and getting seperated from the boat, and about yet another blown out trailer tire, this time on the miles long Mobile Bay causeway!

Great to see everyone from TheBeachcats.com at Juana's, sorry if I failed to meet any of you that were there.

The H18's did pretty well in X-Class considering I led four of six to the wrong channel marker on Saturday's distance race so we sailed several extra miles. icon_frown

Lesson learned: Don't assume you know where to sail just because it's been the same for 9 years in a row, check the regatta board for notices! I don't think the Hobie 18's had ever sailed the shortest course on Saturday, which is why a ASSumed we were going to the middle channel marker (129) instead of the the nearest (127) with the Hobie 16's.

If that was my (second biggest) embarrassment of the weekend, the biggest grin was absolutely OWNING the first race on Sunday.

[bragging mode on]
There were 26 cats in the first (green flag) start, I got a hole-shot on the fleet I'll never forget and took the best line to A-Mark, rounded A-Mark all alone and no one got close the rest of the way!

Hey all,

We are looking forward to seeing you soon!
Hey All,

Looking forward to seeing all of you again this year, and some new faces too!

QuoteWhere is a good place to stay?
There are multiple hotel and rental companies offering discounts for the Regatta. Go to http://nwfevents.com/?page_id=102 and they are all listed with phone numbers at the bottom of the page. Make sure to mention the Regatta when you are booking. Hampton in has a link on the site to bring you to their Regatta booking page so you can get your discount and book on-line.

Also, there is on-line registration this year. And the Gulf Breeze Zoo is providing coupons to all racers that register by September 1. You will be e-mailed the coupons.
juanasHey all,

We are looking forward to seeing you soon!

My favorite regatta, I always encourage everyone to make this one whether they are newbies or experienced, just a great weekend.

I'll be checking the posted course a little more carefully on Saturday this year.

Who is this posting from Juanas? Mandy? or The Juana? Inquiring minds.

CANT WAIT...... WHAT A GREAT TIME... EVERY TIME !!!!!!!! kiffer2
This really sounds like a fun time. I am gonna try to make it to one when we get back down to florida... Besides it would be cool to sail my nacra in the gulf....peace
Pete,

Not knockin it a bit as it sounds like great sailing...just be aware, Juanas course is in the Santa Rosa Sound...but that is only a stones throw to the gulf if you had some free time you would be right there.

Not sure what you mean here? Do you mean I can drive down there from Tn? I doubt I could get away for that much time right now anyways, Sure sounds like a ton of fun tho... Gotta look up Santa Rosa Sound to see where it is really...peace

Pete
Oh, sorry...Navarre Beach and Juana's are on Santa Rosa Island...it's a barrier island separating the sound from the Gulf. At the point where the regatta is held, the island is narrow and you could probably hear the rollers in the gulf when the surf is up.

Any thoughts on planning a "thebeachcats.com" gathering? Perhaps we could meet at the bar sometime Friday afternoon or evening? This is my first time attending, so I'll yield to the veterans to help with the details.

There is the pre-sailing party on Friday from 6-9PM. That is a great place to meet other sailors. There will be live music, free draft beer, free munchies, and you can pick up your t-shirts. If I know you are have a "thebeachcats.com" gathering to get to know one another, I can put up a sign or something for you. Maybe by the food table? icon_wink

-Mandy
Does anyone know if there is any room on a boat? As an extra hand, beer opener, crew, (no real racing experience). Are there any fun sails between events where I could comp a ride? I'd really like to see how a spin works, & see how some of the better sailors do things.
I looked into the idea of renting a Wave for the afternoon fun. Do you need a "boaters license"?
I see the rental shop says you can write an exam there if you don't have a Florida card.
We fly into Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston, lots of South Florida,& lots of the northern cities. Looks like The Big Easy is the closest, is 4 hrs about right to drive from there to Jaunas?
Thanks

QuoteI looked into the idea of renting a Wave for the afternoon fun.

If you enter the Hobie Timed Races, you don't need a boat. You will race one of Juana's Hobie Rentals. Your entry fee for the Regatta covers the use of the boat, so you don't actually have to rent one. Everyone will race the same boats in timed heats.

Ok, I missed this icon_eek Yep, lets gather in the shade of Damon about 6pm Friday on the deck at Juana's for a gathering of TheBeachcats.com.

After our meeting I'll throw a party on the deck, here is the program, available to all members of TheBeachcats.com who are registered for the Juana Good Time Regatta. icon_lol

  • 5-9PM Music by Jerry Diaz and Hanna’s Reef
  • 7-9PM Party with free draft (tip your bartender!), munchies, and $2.75 Coronas.
  • 9:30PM-1:30AM Live Music by the Mojiles. $2.25 draft and $2.75 Corona

Seriously, I'll try to come up with some "Hi I'm" stickers so everyone can display their usernames from here and get to know each other in real life.

I'm heading to Florida/Navarre on the Tuesday after Labor Day (Sep. 6th) to get in a little relaxed sailing before the regatta, so if anyone else is planning on being down early let me know here or by PM.

Thanks, I looked into that site.
Ha Ha, I also fall into the "old enough to bypass the age requirement"
I also noticed the statement, "In Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more". I'll bring my Canadian Yachting Assc power boat & keelboat certifications just in case.
I don't think Waves have engines.
QuoteHey Bombardier Invitation...if you fly in, the closest airport would be in Pensacola

Thanks, i did some more checking. I will come from Canada on Air Canada. Connections to the closer airports seems to be more hassle than doing the 4 hour drive from 'Nawlins. MSY is the closest we fly into direct, I think I'll rent a car & do the drive.

hey ed, if you fly into/out of new orleans between the hours of 10am to 9pm, do your self a favor and get a bite at the harbor seafood rest.. it's directly across interstae 10 from airport on williams blvd- first redlight after the interstate on the left. there is a seafood shop on the left side of the building and a small resturant on the right side. nothing fancy, poboys/gumbo/oysters/crabs/ice cold beers/etc.. great local spot and not pricey at all. you don't want to pass through new orleans and not eat!

while your cruising the coast, if time permits, take hwy 90 form gulfport(hwy 49s) to ocean springs(hwy 57s) and check out the mississippi coast...ocean springs yacht club, secret spot(biloxi). some great cat sailing waters to scout out..

looks like juanas might work out for me this year...somebody has to take up the rear!

Planning to attend. To the veterans, is there an explanation of the races that take place on Saturday? What events are open to H16's aside from drinking beer? I am a novice to racing, and my crew is even more inexperienced and I don't want to get in people's way if this is a hard-core racing event.

Thanks

This is the first year the the Juana Good Time Regatta has had online registration, in the past you either mailed in the form from their newsletter or registered in person on Friday night.

It's a big help to regatta organizers if people register early, so lets help out by registering online if possible. I just registered after I heard they had only received 15 pre-registrations so far. You also receive a ten dollar discount for registering before Sept 1st. (six days left)

The Juana Good Time Regatta prides itself on being a "non regatta" regatta where "Good Time" outranks hard core racing. The format is a nice distance race on Saturday down the sound, flat water and sand beaches on both shorelines. So you can't get in much trouble even if you had to bail out along the way for some reason.

The various boat types are divided into X, Y, and Z fleets based on the speeds of the boats and sent to different channel markers. It helps if you have an idea where these markers are, such as a handheld GPS, otherwise you'll need to follow someone who does know. It's surprisingly difficult to see these from on the water until you are pretty close.

http://juanaspagodas.com/Regatta/regatta-course.png

On Sunday it's closer to traditional bouy racing so the main thing is to understand the basic starting sequence flags and basic mark and right of way sailing rules.

As this is your first regatta, at any point that being in a race does not add to the fun of your weekend, bail out and sail in a way you are having fun. However! If you ever abandon a race that you have started be sure and sail to the committee boat and notify them you have withdrawn! Otherwise you could trigger a widespread and expensive search for your "lost" boat.

Motivated, I had the same concerns that you had the first time i went to Juanas in 2009. I thought the people there were going to be all about racing and that i was going to be in there way... nothing could be further from the truth... the race is all about having fun and meeting some of the nicest people. This will be my 3rd year and wouldnt miss this event for nothing. We drive down from Cincinnati every year for this party! We are bringing 5 Hobie 16s this year... we will be there on thursday and look forward to Damon buying the beer!

Glenn and Damon hit the nail on the head. A good time is what Juana's is all about. Of course we make sure the course is safe and that scores/times are accurate and out fast (largely because I want to join in the festivities) but everyone has the same goal.... to drink, sail, and be merry. icon_smile
Some of the Gastons will be there. Watch out!!!
Ok, so I'm still in Memphis, but I'll be on the road to Juana's in the AM. Should be setting up in the parking lot around 4-7pm if all goes well.

Glad that the cyclone has left the area, looks like the whole gulf coast had 40+ mph winds for three days with lots of rain. Rest of the week and weekend looks clear and mild.

We are excited for all of you to get here! We had 35 boats pre-register which is almost twice as many pre-registrations as last year. 11 boats are new to this regatta and 22 are from out of state! We usually have about 20-30 register between now and Friday night, so we it looks like another good turn out.

See you at the smooth sailing party on Friday night!

Mandy icon_cool
....Sounds like fun....please post pictures next week!!...as far as the winds, I think there were some exagerations out there....At least along I-10 I found only 20+ winds as I drove the whole stretch Sunday. Regardless, I hope anyone affected by the storm came out ok.
