Prindle 16 rudder issues

I have problems pulling and locking rudders while under sail. I have to reach back and lock by hand. They do release ok. I recently replaced the lower spacer but have noted that uphaul line wants to jump the washer on the top. I am a new Prindle 16 sailor and the rudders have been a challange. Any suggestions?

Mark, It's a rhythm you have to get used to. Pull the top line (uphaul) with one hand to get rudder up parallel to hull, then slam down with bottom line til you hear it klunk into casting. No klunk, it's not in! Pete

I have been having the same difficulties on my P18. The downwind rudder will never lock in while underway. I have been typically turning into irons to lock down as my weight in the downwind rear corner while under sail with no hand on the sheet an poor rudder control at best is a situation I am not comfortable in.

same here.. i had a friend try to reach back there to lock one of the rudders in and he fell off the boat icon_lol
here's a little trick I picked up, have you noticed that when you pull on the "rudder up" line, it also lifts the locking bar inside the rudder casting, releasing the locking bolt on the rudder. When dropping the rudder, use both lines, pull gently on the "up" line, which will lift the locking bar slightly, at the same time pull hard on the "down" line, that satisfying "thunk" as the rudders lock down is sweet!
woohoo
