Lots of F18's For Sale?

Why are there so many F18's for sale, on the 1st page of the classified's there are 7 F18's up for sale, and do these guys really think that the majority of us cat sailors can afford to drop $9000 - $10 000 on a sailboat even if it is a catamaran? Are these boats considered "out of fashion", are there more up-to-date cats they need to have to go faster?........ boohoo

a lot if the f18 I have seen for sale were form 2000to2005 so they might be getting newer ones.
my sailing club the top speed the hit was 33mph
@turbohobo,

here's some news: NACRA's new carbon 20ft boat is $35,000.00
Guess that's why those guys have to have so many "sponsor" stickers all over their hulls and sails, reminds me of that song...."sold my soul to the company......"

I heard that the Hobie Wildcat is the F18 boat to have if you are serious about racing. Perhaps people are trying to upgrade. Anyone know how much faster a newer F18 is over an older (early 2000s)? Can an older boat be competitive?

I'm loving the fact that there is a good supply of used F18's coming up. To me it means that a lot of these are buying newer boats and now these more affordable used boats are available to others wanting to move into the spin boat ranks without buying new.

Currently 20 F18's to choose from.

This is what used to happen "back in the day" of big fleets. Hard core (or well off) racers moved up to new boats leaving used ones for entry level sailors.

As far as affordability, even an $18,000 new F18 compares well to other possible "hobby" type purchases.

Would you rather have a Jet Ski? Remember you'll need two, no one like to ride bitch.

Maybe you like to fish so you get a bass boat? Your looking at $20-40,000 easy.

Yeah, that's about the same thing i was thinking, Damon. Motorcycles, 4 wheelers, race cars, shifter carts, powerboats, sailboats, etc none are really that cheap. Hell, a new Laser is $6-7k... WAY more bang for the buck with a used f18.

I guess the deal that comes with catamaran sailing, comes with the detriment of set up time.

So Damon, when are you gonna pull the trigger on a f18? icon_razz

As soon as one of the manufacturers sends me one to test. (not kidding)

Hey, FYI, I bought one of those...listing hasn't been updated. But I think most of them are probably current.

As far as adding to this thread, the buyer's perspective seems as relevant as the sellers, right? Here's mine...I had a small fishing boat that was never used. But (on at least one recent occasion) I was willing to pay to go sailing??!! So, I guess I realized I would be better off to pursue that hobby/passion. Frankly, I think the cat sailing I did as a kid just didn't completely quench the thirst....maybe I'm going back to fill that urge. If I just get the boat out twice as much as the old one, I figure the money invested is worth it.

I'm seeing 2006-2010 F18s for sale too. Is carbon hull pricing dropping?

A-Cats are the all carbon masterpieces, i think f18 rules require aluminum spars and fiberglass hulls. The inter-18 was sort of grandfathered in since it had a carbon mast.
A-Cats can come in all materials.
my friend had one made of plywood
No carbon on F18's. It's a 400 lb boat, nothing light here. The Inter 18 may have been granfathered for a while but not now.
