My new Hobie 16SE. I picked her up in boxes, which gave me the opportunity to put the boat together. It was surprisingly easy thanks to how well the boat is manufactured. I worked slowly and enjoyed the process. First photo shows the boat after connecting the hulls with the cross-members and side rails.


In the second shot, she's about 80% complete. I still have some rigging to do (halyards, shrouds, mainsheet, sails and trapeze lines). You can also see the "Toy Box" which will hold two sets of sails and lotsa gear.


This shot shows the stock graphics on the hulls, which I have replaced. You can also see the aluminum wheels, which match the wheels on my truck.


This final photo shows the new grapics, with the new name replacing the Hobie diamond logo and an old school flying H replacing the new techno hobie logo in the back.


The boat is nearly complete. The sails should arrive from the printers this week, and once the spinnaker kit is installed, she'll be ready to put in the water.

Thanks for the posts. I've had the boat for a month now and I can't describe the level of anticipation to finally put this boat in the water. I live in Atlanta, and not being a fan of lakes, the nearest beach is 5 hours away (Gulf Coast or Atlantic coast). The maiden voyage will take place in Dunedin, FL, which is where I grew up. Planned trips include Myrtle Beach SC, Destin and Marco Island, FL.

I purchased two sets of sails from Hobie and both are being printed with logo's, one of a skull (see my avatar) and the second is a Roman Sun. I'll post pics once I have the sails in hand.

When you say "printed with logo's", what exactly is being done? Is the dacron itself being silk-screened? I've seen that done on spinnakers, or are you having decals made?

I've been wanting sail and hull graphics for a while but it hasn't worked out.

I second this idea, although most all Hobie 16's have been trailered without cradles for these many years, until recently hull cradles were not available for the H16.

Cradles for the bows means your boat will stay centered on the trailer without heavy pressure on the straps, and you can avoid the nasty strap marks that develop during storage or a long trip due to dirt getting under the straps and rubbing on the hulls/decks.

I purchased two sets of sails from Hobie and both are being printed with logo's, one of a skull (see my avatar) and the second is a Roman Sun.

When you say "printed with logo's", what exactly is being done? Is the dacron itself being silk-screened? I've seen that done on spinnakers, or are you having decals made?

I've been wanting sail and hull graphics for a while but it hasn't worked out.

It's been a long process. I had the assistance of a graphics designer in Houston, who was really helpful. She helped me design three custom graphics (logo's) for the sails, one for the spinnaker and one each for the two mainsails. She drew up the logo's in a "vector graphic" format, so they could be blown up to fit on something as large as a sail. I found a company in california (North Graphics) that has a large format printer. They can print graphics up to 6 ft wide. For the mainsails, they literally print the logo onto a very light, UV coated fabric called "sticky-back", which is then affixed to each side of the sail. It is essentially a fabric sticker and is the same process used by hotels and boat sponsors who want their logo's featured prominently on a sailboat. Its light and fairly thin, and won't add much weight to the sail.

For the spinnaker, which is an ultra light fabric, they had to apply the graphics by hand using inks. They did this by creating a stencil, placing this over the spinnaker, then painting over the stencil to create the design.

For the hull grapics, had the graphics designer help me in finding the right font, then took the file (adobe.pdf) to a local sign shop, who cut them out of something called "6 year vinyl" which is designed to be used on boats and vehicles. I had some extra copies of the lettering made just in case the orignals on the boat were ever damaged. This was relatively inexpensive. The flying H logo I just purchased off of Ebay for $12.00.

After all this, I can't tell you how ready I am to actually get out and sail.

Congrats on the new boat! I saw a new H16 in the back of my local sailboat shop being assembled a few weeks ago it sure was pretty I was in the market for a boat at the time and it was very temping to see a shiny new H16 I have nothing but good things to say about a H16 and mine was an 82 and still in great shape so imagine if you take good care of it 29 years from now you will still be enjoying it thats money well spent!

As for boat graphics, I applied boat graphics onto a mono hull that I custom printed from Potter Decal http://www.potterdecal.com/. If you want small graphics it is only $100 or $200 for the larger set.

Here she is rigged up in the driveway. Everything went together very well, except when it came time to lower the mast. I remember well how much a pain in the arse those mast step things are.

Tomorrow, she'll see salt water for the first time. Good times.
