New guy Intro. Just aquired some Prindle 18's.

Hey folks. I'm new 'round these parts, and wanted to introduce myself. As a child my dad has a Prindle 16, and we sailed the crap out of it. Recently a friend passed a Prindle 18 on to me. It was in kinda rough shape. Hulls were real soft on top, and the sides were wavy. After I posted about it on facebook, another friend spoke up, and said he had a Prindle 18 that was in great shape, and I ended up picking it up as well. It was in excellent shape. Lots of grime, and filth on it, but it cleaned up really nice. Hulls are solid, tramp is in great shape, rudders are intact, and it all seems to be good.

This weekend I ran the mast up, and hoisted the main to check it all out, and get some practice. First time raising the mast was an adventure. Different than our old 16 for sure. Those diamond wires were ALL up on my shoulder. :) I finally figured out that you have to kinda jiggy the mast around once it gets to a certain point so that the hinge step thing will collapse some, and allow the mast socket to work it's way onto the ball.

Once I raised, and lowered the mast a few times I got the hang of it. I'm MUCH more comfortable doing it now.

So Far I've got 2 trailers rebuilt with new bearings, wheels, and tires, and 1 boat ALMOST totally complete. I think all I am lacking is the actual Jib itself. It appears that I have the rigging for the jib. (hoisting line with S-hook, and cam cleats with line on them already) I just have to come up with a jib. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm very much looking forward to sailing it here on the MS gulf coast with the local folks. I hope I can get the Yellowtail out with Sideways, and Blue Ribbon one of these days.

I will get some pics up as soon as I get my photo hosting straightened out.

I'm not sure of your budgets, but a nice, new, crisp jib from Whirlwind is $350 for a 5oz dacron. $300 for 4oz if on a budget.
That is not such a bad price. I'm assuming they will come just like a factory zippered jib? If I can't find a serviceable use done, I will likely go this route.

I have read posts over and over about rigging the jib, but still don't "get it" in my head. I see the Ring up in the rigging, and the line I have that goes for raising the jib has a S-hook on it, but I don't quite know how to get it there, and then get it down. I think I will just have to get all the stuff together, get the book out, and just do it.

The S hook jumps on the ring & then you downhaul the jib to bridle which keeps it on ring. To release, loosen downhaul & pull on halyard to jump hook off ring, (remember to have halyard inside zipper when you close it & disconnect sister clip, putting 1/2 halyard away in tramp pocket). I have new white jib for $275. Pete 909-800-5237
If you have spare rudders, I am interested, My repair finally gave up and sank to the bottom. Old or new style. $50 and shipping 508-627-2144. I'll trade a servicable Smyth Jib with good zipper for a pair of rudders.

No Spare rudders. The first boat I got was victim to Katrina, and had the castings cracked, and rudders busted up. What Kinda $ would it take to get your jib, and what kinda shape is it in? Maybe some pictures also.

Wlcome to a great bunch of people.. if you need some help let me know.. i just sold my PRINDLE..Had her for 20+year's....... biggthumpup
Well.. Looks like I've got a Jib on the way from Pete. That OUGHT to complete my boat. Time to start building some sort of front tramp / gear storage system. I need gear for 4 people overnight trips to the islands. icon_biggrin icon_biggrin

Does anyone need a Trailer? Just needs a light kit. I'm sure a deal can be worked. icon_cool

Congrats on the boat, landraider! A word of caution, though. There's no way a Prindle 18 can safely carry four people plus overnight gear out to Ship or Horn Island. Be safe!

Have you sailed over at Ocean Spring YC yet?

Hmm OK I need to look at weight carefully. Is there a published weight limit?

I have not sailed at OSYC. I would not even know where to begin down there.

The Prindle 18 can handle quite a bit of weight but balancing 4 adults with limited tramps space can be tricky. You might pull gear in a small boat behind you as well.

I have sailed with 700+ lbs between me and my son or me and my wife. I usually sail with 500+ lbs when sailing with one of my skinny sons. Can even fly the hull with that.

Document what you do for your front tramp as it is an often talked about topic here and something I may still do down the road. Take lots of pictures and post them in the technical gallery.

Not trying to give you a hard time....just be safe. Even if you are within published limits, you will be on open water for many miles and many hours on a heavily loaded boat, and the Mississppi Sound can get crazy rough. You need to be prepared with off-shore safety gear. Multiple sailboasts and a chase (power) boat to carry bulk of gear would be better. Get in touch with the OSYC guys at http://www.osyc.com/. Some post on here and will probably chime in sooner or later.

good point. After finding out Sea-tow and other services cost around $200/hour, it almost makes you think twice about going too far out icon_eek

If you do, make sure its a south wind type of day....bound to drift back to the coast sooner or later.
I'm definitely not new to the nautical scene by any means.. Just getting back into sailing is all. I fully understand the dangers....weather, squalls, troubles, etc. I've got a waterproof handheld vhf with 2 meter ham freq's plugged in so I can call a mayday if I had to, and I can hit all the ham radio repeaters along the coast if it were a non emergency. Got friends with power boats if I needed it, and I'm what you'd call conservative when it comes to open crossings. I have paddled out to horn from fountainbleau in my kayak, and that's prob where I'd launch from to go visit horn.

I appreciate you guys' concerns!! I will be doing some load testing here on the inside long before we all pile in to the islands.

As far as the yacht club... I don't know if I could justify that expense. How are those guys about sailing with non members? Can anyone participate in their events?

I'm just excited to be able to sail again. icon_biggrin

Hopefully these hulls are watertight, and there aren't any hidden problems!!

OSYC is very catamaran friendly and their regatta events are open to all. Their next event is a mixed fleet regatta the weekend of August 27th, the "Katrina Regatta".

Also make sure you hookup with the "secret spot" guys, take a look at this thread. I don't think you've mentioned exactly where you are on the Beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast, but it's not very big so this should be right in your neighborhood.

Read all 15 pages of the thread titled "O SEGREDO FROTA" and you'll get to know the cats in your area, no yacht club required.

Thanks for the info.

I was unsure how the yacht club folks would react to non members, and I'm glad they're open to misfits. I am PRETTY sure I've got the "secret spot" narrowed down. I ran across it in my floundering days. Nice launch spot... plenty of beach for setup. Minimal obstacles in the way.

Im hoping to meet the local guys soon.

secret spot = Coon street launch (right next to BYC)
Glad to hear all that, landraider! Dig around the OSYC website to find contact info for Ken Altman (Commodore) or Joe Pocreva (Fleet Captain).....they are very friendly and are working very hard at growing catsailing in the area.

I'm not sure I'd classify the members of OSYC (at least the ones who sail) as "Yacht Club Folks", more as "Sailing Club folks" or "Catamaran Sailing Folks", or just "cool folks who like to have a convenient place to sail and drink".

You want "Yacht Club Folks", visit Biloxi Yacht Club. icon_cool

Hope all goes well, i have been trying to get out for the past 2 weeks and between rain, lack of wind, and work schedules we just cant make it happen.
Well...

Secret Spot launch, and setup went well. Got in the water, and around to the beach to set up eaisly. No traffic, and no one waiting on me to launch their boat. Walked the mast up with little trouble, and got it set. Rigged the jib incorrectly, and it was "stuck" up. I fully understand how the jib goes up now. :) I ran the hoisting line up through the ring that the S-hook is supposed to catch on... So.. once I caught it, there was no way to uncatch it. No bigge though. Raised the main, and got things situated, and headed out into the winds that were blowing directly from the south. icon_lol icon_lol Silly me.

The obstacle course of broken up peir on the right, and boats moored on the public pier on the left was challenging to say the least. My dad and I were able to tac and reach about 6 times to get out into the channel and past the piers. We totally got RIGHT up in some guys fishing. icon_rolleyes icon_frown Failed a few times to get the boat to tac, or reach, and had to go back at it, and pick up speed to try again. 4 out of 10 on the pucker factor... but no close calls.

Started playing around on in the channel, dodging boats, and pilings... getting my rudders locked down, and getting things sorted. had a pretty good time back and forth for about 20 minutes. Then... to the north, the sky turned black, and the winds picked up to about 20 knots. We tried to do some more maneuvering back and forth, and it was getting wild to say the least. Hull coming up easily, and we just weren't ready for it. We turned in to the wind to tac, and I forgot to uncleat the main... icon_lol icon_eek and when she came around, the wind caught the main, and picked us way way up... ALMOST put it on the side, and I managed to steer us back upwind as it was launching out like a rocket, and un cleated the main. Pucker factor 7 out of 10

We sailed directly over to deer island where they pumped all that sand up, and thought about how we were going to get back to the launch in this wind. After about 20 minutes of poopoo pants clean out, we just decided to head back in, and let the wind push us up on shore. That went really well, and was considerable easier than getting out. We got it to the beach, and I turned her upwind, and pulled up the rudders, and we backed it up on the beach just in time to tear it down in the rain, and 30 knot gusts.

We had to pull the mast down with the jib attached due to my mistake earlier, but that was no big deal. I am certainly glad I practiced stepping the mast in the privacy of my place. icon_smile At least that went down with minimal problems.

Overall I am glad that nothing bad happened, but I wish my girlfriend would have been able to get out there with me. I just did not feel comfortable taking her out there in that wind with the piers on each side as inexperienced as I am.

BUT..... Boat ran great, hulls had 0 water in them, did not flip it, no one hurt... I'd say it was a good trip.

I REALLY need a more open spot to learn in, or someone with experience to show me the ways. Time for a drink now. Pics to follow. icon_cool

Lost the paddle when we Almost flipped it. Walked the beach after the storm, and recovered it from some folks throwing a cast net on the beach. LUCKY.

Look into launching at courthouse rd pier in gulfport, there is a nice place to launch cats if you have beach wheels. The only obstacle is to walk the boat out past the people at peak hours (1-3pm or so), and avoid the pier at your starboard side when launching.

We usually walk the boat out until we are chest deep or so and give it a nice push to point us east away from the pier. Biloxi seems like a fun place to launch with some experience, but casino channel can be super crowded sometimes.

If weather allows i may be around the courthouse pier on Saturday.

Well.. I explored the fountainbleau area, and down on belfountain road. There looks like a spot that you might be able to launch on if you have some beach wheels. I guess it is secret spot for now.
