Hull Deck ripped from hull by side stay in blow over, is this repairable?

This boat was sitting with the mast up on the lawn when we got enough wind to blow it over. The right side stay ripped the deck from the hull and the mast was slightly bent. Is this worth trying to epoxy this back together? Here are some photos of the damage.

I don't really know if it can be fixed or not, my guess is that this might be such a severe structural failure that the integrity of the hull might be comprimised, especially since this also supports the mast. I would think that there's a lot of force at work on this particular spot on the hull. Have you considered just replacing the hull from a donor boat?

By the way, my condolences on your boat. I leave my mast up frequently and was surprised to see that it could get windy enough to topple something as heavy as a H16 in your yard! Must have been one heck of a storm.

Bob, you should be able to fix this without too much trouble. It doesn't look like it has affected the tramp attachment points, or the resulting decking around that. I had a side stay rip the chain plate from my hull in a 30kt blow while on the trapeze, fun times. Needless to say it left a gaping hole in the hull. I would think that you should be able to cut away any frayed fiberglass, basically clean it up for re-bonding. Fiberglass mating is very, very strong once it has resin and hardner in it. If you would like some basic instruction on how you can fix this without too much trouble or cost, get in touch with me.

As for the mast..... I would look for another one. Pbegle has h16 masts for a song. Get in touch with him.

We put his P-16 back together between landsailing excursions on Ivanpah after a 5' separation when former owner sail without drain plugs several hours, then called Newport harbor patrol! Lots of West Epoxy & many tie-down straps. He sails on Lake Mohave now a year later in 20-25 winds. And yes I have H-16 mast & can ship Friday. Pete

Also this bumps your thread to the top so more people will see the pics. I think this can be fixed, but it needs an excellent fiberglass worker who understands catamaran construction. Where are you located, maybe someone can help you find a pro.

Whether it is really worth repairing depends on what the rest of the boat is worth I guess. Tell us more about the age and condition of the H16 before the damage.

Stayin' thirsty.... (if that's your real name) it's way easier to flip a Hobie 16 on land than you realize. That raised tramp creates quite a bit of lift in thunderstorm type winds. They will rise up off the ground and go flying like a beach umbrella. Make sure you secure your new boat to the ground with something strong like mobile home anchors.

Here's the P-16 at Ivnpah dry Lake being repaired that pbegle mentioned above. The first repair job held up for 1 season and I almost sank it after a 3' section separated again, The second repair was more thorough and this boat is solid as a rock now.

On the second repair I after sealing the tear back together I drilled 3 holes along the middle of the deck and shot in about a quart of epoxy and let it drain along the inside seams where the tears were then resealed the holes.

Here's the P-16 at Ivanpah Dry Lake being repaired that Pete Begle pbegle mentioned above. Both hulls separated from the deck from the front crossbar area all the way around the transom. The first repair job held up for the 1st. season and I almost sank it after a 5' section separated again on one hull. The second repair was epoxy it up! Now this cat is solid as a rock now.
