I just purchased a boom, jib (used 4 times) and main sail with battens and blocks off ebay $200 for everything...thought it was a great deal. Then I had the gentleman drop it off at a local shipping store similar to mail box etc. so I could take care of shipping. Due to the oversized box 117"x14"x14" it is going to cost $500 to ship. Well at that price I migh as well take the loss and buy brand new sails.
Any advise on shipping these things cheaper......PLEASE HELP.

Cut the box down. You're 8 inches too large. UPS packages can be up to 165 inches length and girth combined. (117 + 2x14 + 2 x 14) = 173 inches. You should be able to ship that for less than 100 bucks.

* edit. I'd see if he can cut a few inches on the 14" sides. A UPS depot would probably help with that, but not a mb etc.

AWSOME!!!! Thanks, think we can make those dimensions. I also told the people to take the battons out and fold the sails they can get that pretty small then ship the boom and battons separatly well under that formula above..this should be helpfull to alot of people.

I had long battens shipped either UPS or Fed Ex. Tami used two regular long boxes taped end to end to make 8'.
The boxes were 6"x6". It only cost around $35 from on the Gulf coast to Canada, might be more as the weight would be greater. If you were to roll the sails snugly around the boom, I think it would all fit in one box.
Those dimensions would accommodate a sail for my 5.7. If you had to fold the edge of the widest part of the sail, it should make the 8' long dimension.

Found out this morning that the formula above is not completely correct. The maximum length that can be shipped is 108" anything over that automatically goes to freight charges and hundreds of dollars. Ive desided to ship the sails separatly folded nicely in a small box for about $30.00, no boom or battens. I really was interested in the sails and was a good deal. I am probably going to leave them at the shipping store in TX near galveston and sell them on ebay, here, or Craigslist. for next to nothing. Spread the word, for boom and battens for sale!! Cheap

Drats, sorry about that! I've shipped 6 foot long signs in mattress boxes before, but maybe that were under that 108 limit, I can't really remember, I just know they were huge. You might want to check http://www.freightquote.com/, for a freight quote. There are LTL (Less Than Load) trucks all over the place, you might get it there reasonably.

At least you got new sails out of the deal!

Boom and battens for what kind of boat?
