The Macho Man Distance Race

Registration for the Macho Man is available to everyone, but:
Must be at least 2 persons on each boat.
This year we're going to score the big race.
Since it's inception it's been a “run what ya brung” no rules, first one to Dunedin Causeway wins.
This year Tampa Bay Cat Sailors is going to run this as a two day event.
Day one, Lemans start from Davis Island sea plane basin to Dunedin Causeway. Start time 8 AM. The distance is approx 75 miles.
If you ever wanted to try a long race this would be a good one.
Only two person boats will be allowed for this race.
Trophies given for top three places and one for line honors.
Registration includes one T-Shirt and two drink tickets good at Cricketers, a pub located on the Causeway. They will also have an appetizer bar set up for us, a private section for race participants, and an outstanding band (Tribal Style). We will do the Trophy presentations there.
We will also do registration for the Mini Macho at the same time. For those that register for the Mini Macho this will be a pre-race party.
Registration will be at Davis Island Friday March 23rd from 4pm to 7pm and Saturday morning starting at 6 am. Important: If you do not reach the Dunedin Causeway by 5:00pm, please contact the Race Committee. Contact info will be given after email registration.

Start/Finish: Dunedin Causeway – Next to Honeymoon Island
Registration: Saturday Afternoon with RC on the Causeway and at
Cricketers after the big race the night before. Skipper’s Meeting:
10:00am Start: 11:00am Cost: $30 TBCS members $5 off.
Day two, this will be a distance race circling Caladesi Island and Clearwater Beach. If
the breeze is up some additional distance will be added. This is a course that gives
open water (the Gulf) and a technical leg (skinny water) St. Joseph Sound.
This race is open to all boats. There will be three classes, High, Low Portsmouth and
Spin.
Trophies three deep per class.
Registration will be Saturday afternoon with the race committee on the Causeway and
at Cricketers after the big race.
You are encouraged to register at the beach or at Cricketers. Skipper and crew will
receive a drink ticket good at Cricketers. There will also be an appetizer bar.

I plan on entering the mini-macho man. My daughter surprised me last night when I talked about it by saying, "I want to be your crew." (I was planing on sailing single handed.)

This sounds like some good sailing in a beautiful area, would have to buzz close to Clearwater beach since it will no doubt be full of Spring Breakers!

The longer Macho Man sounds like a "one way" race, so you need a ground crew to bring car and trailer from the Yacht Club to the causeway?

Is this the route of the two races?

Black link is Macho and Red line is Mini-Macho if I have it right, pretty much explore the Tamp Bay area! What are the normal wind and water temps that time of year?

Generally, the routes that Damon presents are correct, however if I were doing the Macho-Man, I think I would cut it a lot closer to the shore on the southern end. I'm pretty sure that small sailboats can get under the bridge that is about half a mile south of the mainland, then cut between Pass A Grille and Tierra Verde.

However, one of the reasons I'm not doing the race because I don't know much about that area.

I am not from the area but have sailed it some, my buddy has a getaway in South St Pete on the bay side and we go to the bridge islands all the time. I am pretty sure that is not the case, to get to the gulf side you pretty much have to go under the skyway. I would have to look at a chart to be sure. It will be rough water no matter the wind under the main part of the bridge, just due to boat traffic If the weather is decent it would be a blast. HTH, Ricardo.

That's the basic route. Everyone just runs around Ft. Desoto for the big race. Last year I installed FlytoMap GPS for iphone and it worked great.

The wind can be all over the place, as was the case last year. We started out in 3kts and it dropped to 0 until the sea breeze kicked in to a steady 12-15. I can't recall water temp, perhaps around 70 I'm guessing? We raced in shorts & t-shirt most of the race, opting for splash gear in the late afternoon once the wind picked up and the sun started to fade.

Makes me want to go! We did Ruff Rider (Texas coast 150 miles in two days), 90 the first day was no problem. Again sounds like fun.
By the way can you tell it is cold and boring in Kansas? LOL, Richard.

Is there any count yet on how many are coming and or signed up? I understand that is the same weekend as Mid Winters in Pensacola. Is this race for sure, so I can make reservations?

Both of those races sound like a blast!! I may not be macho enough for Saturday's race. But I'm very interested in the mini-macho.

What was the winning time last year?

A little less than 12 hours, with about 5 of that with no wind in a float fest.

No not planning on going North for the Mini Macho. It's easy to add distance by requiring the boats go around few marks.

I have e-mailed a few people on this race and so far it sounds like a blast!! With my current sailing ability I am only in for Party Saturday night and the Mini-Macho. I plan on trailing my boat up to causeway Sunday Morning (maybe Saturday). Can I leave it over night Saturday to Sunday?? Cost?? Is it safe??

Also in all honesty how long on average is the Mini Macho race?? And distance?? Normal finish time??

I will most likely be single handing, on 2000yr NACRA I 17, No jib/spinnaker.

I know Daniel_T on here and look forward to meeting some new people.

Yes, you can leave your cat on the beach overnight. Technically the city of Dunedin requires a weekend overnight pass ($10, I believe) which can be purchased at the Parks & Recreation Department: 1920 Pinehurst Road, Dunedin, fl Alternately you can purchase a year-long pass which allows the holder to leave their boat 2 nights/week.

The boats are safe as the causeway closes at 11pm nightly and is frequently patrolled. Many Dunedin catsailors leave their boats nearly every weekend without incident.

The mini macho is approx 15 miles and will take around 2-3 hours, depending on conditions. If you have other questions don't hesitate to email me privately: headhunter76@gmail.com

the $10 pass / permit allows you to leave it overnight for 2 nighte as well

Any word on keeping the boats inside the gate of the yacht club Friday night?

We will not have access to parking inside the gate at DIYC due to an A-class regatta this weekend. They commonly host events which overflows into public parking, so it won't be an issue. I just wouldn't leave anything overnight that can wander off (blocks, sails, etc.)

The A-class regatta's first flag isn't until 10:30a and we'll be long-gone by then.

That's going to kind of bite for the out of town folks.

I went sailing today in 20-25 mph winds with the intention of taking my boat to the Dunedin Causeway for the mini mach man... What I learned was that I'm not quite ready to undertake that particular adventure yet.

I have only sailed my F16 a few times since I got it and even though I didn't capsize today, I was too uptight to go through with the 8 mile trek alone up the inter-coastal. And if I can't do that today, then going out into the gulf tomorrow would be a bit of a problem. I'll keep practicing and be ready for the next distance race.

I'm looking forward to hearing the results as well. The strong southerly breeze means the race was more-or-less an upwind/downwind course. I'm sure it was exciting for all of the participants.
