Into cat sailing for 2,5 years now sailing a P18-2 , the N 18sq draws
my attention for the second time.
First of all, I will sail my P18-2 till it is completely in my pocket, will
sail it next season and the upcoming race or two . But its a lot of
trim-lines while sailing solo.
I'm a big guy, 280 Lbs and my occasional crew weights 143 Lbs .
The 18sq drew my attention for it's beam and a mainsail only, thus
much more simple sailing.


Now, in my previous post, a discussion came up about the 18sq and I am
confused, texelrating says 103 for a 18sq and 105 for a N F18 infusion.
So a 1993 18sq can beat a 2010 F18 infusion ?

Nacra 5.5 SL is not advertised as such in Europe, nor is the 5.5 Uni.
Can't find anything about the uni on the web.
For me it's about the beam, with my weight it could be
interesting in our windy conditions.

And, again, its just a little investigation for my next cat.

Not sure if you are confused or if you are succeeding in confusing the reader. The 5.5sl and 5.5 Uni are not an 18sq. The 18sq is a development class. It's old and a member of the deadboat society but a great boat all the same. In the right hands it is a fast platform, especially in a breeze (speaking racing against other boats here). Instead of getting confused about the texel rating, if you would look at the DPN it might add some clarity for you.

Just my opinion, but adding a spin to an 18sq completely looses the magic of sailing the square off the wind.

Nacra made 2 versions...one based on the 5.2 hull with a 10 foot beam...then moved to the 5.5 hull with an 11an foot beam. 18 square was a development class limited to a box rule of 18the foot length and 193 feet of sail. The boats fall into 2the categories. Cat 1 is under 330lbs....and cat 2 over 330lbs....each category has its own rating
