Gimme about two weeks and I can post to this thread. That's about how long 'till I can put my boat on the water for the first time and raise sail.

Hey, when you do get your Reynolds in the water, mind writing up a report of how she sails? I'm curious how it handles with the weight of those hulls. Looks like it should be a fast, stable ride.

Hey Guys,
The Maple Leaf is actually a decal. Chip Buck hooked me up!! Great set of sails. I've been around just haven't been too vocal. Been way too busy.

I've been looking at a 5.0 about 10 hours from me but I'm debating whether I need the second boat. My 5.2 is too pretty and I have sooo much time and money in her now. I know I want one eventually but am not sure if I want to start over on a new project right now. Silly eh.

That's the color I eventually want on my H17. You have to tell me what paint you used and where to get it.

Is your non skid an applied adhesive or did you mask and paint it on?

It is the 'Sublime' color from the 70s Hemis. I got it in Awlgrip--they didn't have it, so they made is especially for me (supposedly).

I used the West Marine non-skid tape, but I will probably paint it on in the future. I wanted to get a good idea of what I wanted before it was permanent.

This is what I did:

I started with a 12" strip at the front beam. The following segments are 1 inch less each. I picked some angle that looked right and copied it down the hull. I used making tape to put a 1" spacer between segments. I actually miscalculated and should have started with a 13" segment, but it actually worked out much better. When we got down to a 1" strip, we decreased the gap to 1/2". We moved the first 1" strip to midway between the adjacent strips and it worked out perfectly.

I have to thank my friend Jason and his wife, Monica for the suggestion to move that one piece--it made all the difference in the world.

I'm going to paint a strip from the front beam to the bow. Pictures coming soon

If you paint your boat that color--you owe me a quarter. Copyrights, y'know.

looks great! -
Man, that's awesome! I love the pattern. (Hope you don't mind if I... um... put a pattern of non-skid on my boat that's "inspired" by yours. (Love it when Hollywood uses that term for a remake movie.))

I'm curious, though. You said if you had it to do over you'd put the non-skid in the paint rather than on a sticker. Mind saying why? I'm looking at re-doing the gelcoat on my deck after I drill 'n fill the soft spots near the daggerboard trunks. I've been holding off applying non-skid until the work is done. I was planning to get the West Marine non-skid and essentially do what you did, but with a lot less panache. But since I'm re-doing the gelcoat, I have the opportunity to add non-skid in while I'm doing it. I can think of a couple of reasons to do it that way, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Thanks,

Tom

Dan,
That is awesome!

Bob,
I'm assuming that is not your P16. Whatever it is it looks aweome, and expensive.

I think the reason to paint the grip on is that the decal tape tends to tear off with use fairly easily. I know that has been my experience. Pain in the butt to keep it neat.

Tom,

Dave is right on the peel and stick non skid peeling off. It is easier to apply it if you are just doing a stripe, but corners and deck hardware are hard to get around. The roll-on non skid lasts a lot longer and it is easy to touch up. The stuff I used was the per-foot heavy duty non skid from West Marine and it isn't that sticky. It is like 60 grit sand paper and I still don't have fingerprints from installing it!

The decks on the A look like the boat went through a hail storm, and with the clear coat on the paint, it really brings it out. I am going to scuff up the surface and roll on clear coat with the West Marine non-skid filler. It will make it a little lighter, but it will mask the dimples and look better over all.

I completely sanded down the hulls on my Supercat and had them re-gelled. We then masked off a really cool pattern for the non-skid and rolled it on. It looks GREAT! We used the West Marine white non-skid additive with white gel coat. I filled in the seam that goes all the way around the boat and ran the non-skid in about an inch strip all the way down to the bows on the top, tying it in nicely with the non-skid on the dides and decks. Now, I can walk out to the bow if I need to.

That would be a great way to cover up andy deck work on the old Hobies, too!
Awesome, Dan! That's just the info I was looking for.

The gel coat on my deck is old, UV damaged, dinged, and has alligator cracking in a number of places. At the end of the summer I'm planning to drill 'n fill the soft areas, grind down the impacts to check for glass damage, grind down all the pockmarked ding areas, and basically prep it for rolling new gel coat across the entire deck. (Which will mean removing all the @#$^ hardware I spent the last month installing. ARGH!)

I know it'll be orange peely, but that's better than dull and cracky. And if I can hide some of the orange peely effect with West Marine non-skid additive, so much the merrier! Most of the deck is patterned for non-skid already, so it'll mean grinding that out prior to the work. But it won't look out of place if 90% of the deck winds up covered with non-skid.

Thanks for the tip!

Dan,
I just got some rubber peel and stick grip strips. They look like rubber diamond plate, i think they are made for stair treads. What do you think of that instead of the gritty stuff? Probably would have to be reinforced with contact cement but it would be very tacky, even when wet.

Dave, I have sailed on a cat with that foam and it has good traction while it remains supple. The heat and sand in SoCal had it brittle and breaking off by the end of the second season. Maybe it will last longer in your local conditions.

Hey Bill

Looks more like a P18-2 or 19 just a bit bigger. It has boards and as designed has under hung rudders. I'm building transom hung cassette rudders so I can get her into shallow waters. When I slide her in the water I'll let you know It's only three hours from H'burg to here so you can come up and hang out for a day or so. I'm shooting for an August relaunch. I'm also hoping to take this to meet Hokulea when she comes around this big ass marble we all live on..............

Whoever rigged the mainsheet on that Prindle should not do that.

Yurdle & Soulofasailor,

Above is the offending mainsheet that is apparently reeved incorrectly. Havlii alerted me to my grave error, but neither he nor I while looking at the main sheet could figure out what the problem was. Perhaps it was because we were busy wiping the smiles off of our faces at 15 knots, but I really want to ask the experts what I have done wrong. I have included a screenshot of Souls mainsheet that was featured prominently in his youtube video for you two to use an an example. I really at a loss. Could you sit down in your easy chairs and diagram where I went wrong? Camera angle? Nah couldn't be.

http://www.thebeachcats.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=87067&g2_serialNumber=3
At first glance it looks like the main with the green line has the top block rotated 180.

Ideally you want all the lines running through a set of blocks to look like they're going around an oval race track. Round and round and round, always turning the same direction. But never crossing in the middle and never reversing the turn direction. This keeps everything running cleanly.

I'd take a picture of mine and post it, but... It's still in my yard. (Hey, I got my trailer back from the welder today and got it registered! There's hope!)

keschwa,

Your mainsheet may or may not be reeved incorrectly. It could be simply twisted.

It looks like a 7:1 setup, with four sheaves on the bottom and three on the top.

I would reeve it as follows:
1) run the bitter end through the cam cleat ring and into the bottom-middle sheave.
2) then up through the back of the top middle sheave.
3) then run it down through the front of the bottom left sheave
4) then run it up through the back of the top left sheave
5) then run it down through the left side of the lateral sheave
6) then up through the front of the top right sheave
7) then down through the back of the bottom right sheave
8) then up to the ring and tie it off.

Hope this helps.

keschwa,

I just found a link to a 7:1 system online and it seems to be reeved like yours. http://www.murrays.com/archive/20-21.pdf

1) through cam cleat and into front of bottom middle sheave
2) up through back of top right sheave
3) down through back of bottom right sheave
4) up through front of top middle sheave
5) down through back of bottom left sheave
6) up through back of top left sheave
7) down through left side of lateral sheave
8) up and tie off on ring.

I went back and looked at the original pic, and I think the bowline on the boom is deceiving -- it looks (and looked) like you had it run through that tang up and back down.

With that line in front of the blocks, there's no way from the pic to see if they're reeved correctly; however, I was just commenting on that line you have tied separately.

I would still, just for the sake of ease, swap your upper for a triple w/ becket so that you don't have to do that, and you can detach blocks from boom w/ one snap/soft shackle.

Unless your cam cleat is on the far left or right side of the block, I don't think the above is doable. If the cam cleat is in the middle of one of the blocks, then it is better to work your way to one side, then use the lateral sheave to switch to the other side, then work your way back to the middle again.

If you don't have a lateral sheave, then it is better to turn one of the blocks 90 degrees and reave it like in this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXibVitpnRo

Is the Harken Company a respected authority? Harken blocks which we all know and love. See this link and scroll to the instructions for rigging a 6-1, blocks turned 1/4 to one another is the recommended method, no oval race track here. You can also reference US Army field manual FM 5-125. I would defer to either of these authorities. A 7-1 adds one additional sheave and ties at the becket (top block) or the boom.

I have the harken 8:1 system that they show on that page and it was reeved as shown too. I didn't like the crossing lines (Lines 1 and 4 cross and lines 2 and 7 cross,) so I redid it so none of the lines crossed and I don't have lines jumping from the far left of one block to the far right of the other (as line 4 does in their diagram.) I don't want to hijack this thread any more than we already have. Maybe PM or a different thread?

No that I stirred things up and my sarcasm and sense of irony was lost on some - I will attempt to get things back on message. The above is My Prindle 18 with the controversial mainsheet. I won't argue with Havlii's references as I used the Harken 6:1 diagram when setting the blocks up for my Hobie 16, but in my opinion the proof that it is reeved correctly is in the operation while under sail. When I sheet in everything works smoothly and quickly, same when I release the sheet regardless of the photo.

I respect that people like rigging their boats differently but unless we are class racing there is a bit of leeway in what you can do and still operate safely. Yurdle takes his blocks off the mast with a clip, I leave mine on and remove the lower block from the traveler car, wrap the sheet and blocks on the boom and store in my trailer box. When I need to depower while on the beach, I remove the ball lock pin from the clew of the sail/outhaul and lay the boom on the tramp. The blocks were less than a season old when my 16 took its last sail to the landfill, so by using what I had on hand to outfit the Prindle I saved a bit of cash. The cost was some fun on the internet getting "schooled" on rigging a Prindle based upon a photo of a SuperCat. Gotta love it.

Bob

It's easy enough to flip over. If you're in shallow water make sure to pull the wings off before you start!

Get a couple people pulling on the trap lines and pull it over slowly. Can also get a third to grab the mast as it's coming over to keep it going slow.

We had to do it recently with the 21 when a storm blew in with sustained 40mph and gusts to 60. Was safer to get it over on it's side pointed into the wind than worry about a gust flipping it and damaging the mast.

Daniel- great vid, thanks for sharing.

I have to compliment your crew. Great extension on the wire, wide stance and she knows where to be to balance the boat. She doesn't hang on to the trap handle, always has a sheet in her hand and can drive!
She obviously loves to sail.
Looks like a keeper to me.

Uwe, even with a substantial crew on the front crossbar, you are still popping a wheelie over that wave. Looks like you are sailing in the Washing Machine Nationals. Is this from the Texas coast?

Bob, that was from the 2012 Dash, the 4th leg of the Great Texas 300. We were working our way out thru the surf. First time away from the lake for me. I was kind of nervous at first but it was easier than I thought. Seeing 3 water spouts in the morning had me worried too.

Look at the CAT that followed me home this weekend! And Momma said I could keep her. 23 hours and 600 miles..... new bearings, new tires while we worked in the Wisconsin cold next to an aircraft hanger and her trailer made it home without excitement.
It is a '84 5.7 that needs a bit of TLC.

At 2:00 I am the yellow sail starting. Made it halfway before getting calmed, caught in a thunderstorm gust front, and aggravating a shoulder injury caused us to retire. The waterspouts were pretty cool.

Now that's a good sailing buddy you got there, he actually reached out a hand to help. When I fall off, mine just runs over the top of me and hopes I grab the dolphin striker or something...
Cool video
Wht do I know...this summer was my first season of sailing! The miracle 20 is a handful in anything other than light air....but it's fun!
