New (old) Prindle 16 in Houston, TX

Hi everyone. I found this site while researching the Prindle 16 catamaran. I recently had the opportunity to pick one up for free. It's currently disassembled and has been that way for about 15 years. (I think its a 70's model but don't know how/where to check) The hulls, boom, rudders, and trampoline were stored in a garage and out of the elements. The mast was the only thing stored outside, but I didn't notice any rust And the sails were kept inside the house.

I have a little sailing experience, but only with single hulls and I haven't sailed since back in 05. So my baseline knowledge of rigging and everything is a little rusty.

My question is what should I look for, where should I begin, etc. before I put this thing back together and eventually get back on the water?

Anyways, here's a picture of how it sits now... I would like to at least get the hulls attached to the frame so I can trailer it from the owner's house to my place and work on it there.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Joe,

Welcome to TheBeachcats.com, you've come to the right place.

Lots of Prindle 16 owners here that can answer specific questions. Fill out your signature with name/boat/location and maybe we can hook you up with someone local.

The Prindle 16 assembly manual would be some good reading for you before you begin. It's available here in both picture and downloadable form.

Be sure and keep taking pictures as you go to keep us updated on how your boat is coming along.

It is at least an 80's boat. It has the inspection ports of the newer boats. Look at the stern for a vin tag, the last 2 numbers are the year if I'm right.
What I'm not seeing are the ruddercastings, tramp, blocks, sails and rigging. I do hope those are included.

The only parts that I do not see or that were not mentioned are the rudder casting. They are available if not with the boat. The hulls can be attached to the crossbars in about 15-20 minutes, very easy to do. As Damon said download the manual from performance catamarans site. Even if the rigging was there I WOULD BUY NEW, the rigging is probably 15-20 years old. Still a very small investment for what appears to be a very good boat. If you would like you may call me and I would be happy to talk you through the process of putting the beams on the hulls for transport.

I just donated a P16, some parts, and an extra trailer to a Sea Scout Troop/Venture Crew in Baytown as a parts boat for their P16. They might be interested in selling parts if you need any, but I'd have to look for their contact information.

There are quite a few cat sailors in the area that can help you rig up. Go to www.tcdyc.com they are having a meet and greet/sail clinic at the Texas City Dike the first Saturday of May.

Thanks for all the help guys! The rudder castings were there in the ceiling of the garage, I just didn't take them down. The bad thing is that the owner couldn't find the box that had all the miscellaneous nuts, bolts, and washers. So I might have to take a trip to lowes to find all of the right hardware.

I've been reading about fiberglass delamination, but didn't get a chance to check when I saw the boat yesterday. What are the odds that there are some delaminated spots if the hulls have been in a garage most of their lives?

I have all the parts you will need to put the boat together. Beam bolts, anchor bars, anchor pins, twist clips, shroud adjusters. Hull plugs (under the beams) if they are missing. Mast bearing, rudder gugdens, rudder pins.

I wouldn't buy those at Lowes but not because Lowese is bad but in my experience they will not have what you need in the right type of metal and dimensions. You would better getting used from HULLFLYER or new from Murrays.

great looking prindle joe! as one of our members bob miller says..."a free cat isn't"...i agree with the guys above, there are some specialty hardware parts that the local store wont have, not all, but some. you have the right plan...put the boat together first, see what's missing/needing replacement. i would put a new set of standing rigging on you list(145$ from salty dog), as it's your biggest safety item(mast doesn't fall down on you). good luck and know that you have found the worlds largest collection of prindle sailors right here!

Joe - Check out the Seabrook Sailing Club http://www.seabrooksailingclub.org. We've got 3 Prindle 16s there and a number of other cats, and mast up storage.

What else is in that garage? I see a centerboard and handrails. Anything else being given away?

UPDATE**

I got the chance to check out the boat yesterday and wipe it down a little bit. Checked for any delamination by pressing pretty hard with my palm all over and didn't hear any crunching, so that's great news! I got the rudder castings down from the attic and they're still in good shape as well.

I also dug out the trailer form its heavily wooded home its been laying in for 20 years. I'll obviously need new tires... But I had a question about the trailer piece that holds the mast up: Where does it actually attach to the trailer? Anyways, here's the pictures:

Check out Northern Tool for the trailer stuff. I bought new hubs and tires from them and they are pretty reasonable. Make sure you know what size the spindles are first. They come packed with grease so you are good to go.
My mast yoke attaches to the main beam forward on the trailer. From the looks of it, yours may attach to the forward cross member.

It looks like you have three crossbars that are part of the frame, aside from the two others that hold up the cat. The shortest crossbar toward the front looks as if it may have a bracket and through bolt setup for the upright that supports the mast. That is about the right distance forward for it.

Do you have the upright clamped to the trailer for this photo?
Can you take a closeup picture of the bottom of the upright piece and that short crossbar?

It attaches to the trailer tounge and quite forward, if you attached to the cross member, the mast will stick up very high because of the angle. Watch out for the trees and bridges.
Is this too high? Do have to watch the trees when pulling into campgrounds.

As you can see, the cradle is attached in front of the bows, attach it in front of the front crossbar and there will be a great difference, and about 16 feet of mast overhanging from the support.
Thanks for all the help guys.

The mast cradle did attach to the trailer tongue. We had to make a bracket and fasten it to the top with some bolts, but upon closer inspection we could see indentations of where it was mounted before. I got some brand new trailer tires for it and applied some new grease to the axles as well. I forgot to take a picture , but its all rigged up to the trailer and I should have it at my place this Sunday.

Also, got in touch with a local guy here in Houston that has all the P16 parts I'll need to get her back on the water.
I haven't been this excited about something in a long time... I've been having sailing dreams again haha

**UPDATE**

I finally got everything set up except for the rudders, rudder castings, and the jib (going to pick up a jib next week). Does anyone have any tips on how to run the pulleys inside the rudder castings, so that the locking bar on the spring comes up when you pull?
