I'm not very knowledgeable on what materials one should use for the halyard but I did recently ordered a new one from http://www.saltydogmarine.com/ and found that their price was about half ($40) what everybody else was asking (Murrays or local sail maker). I ordered it together with some other spare parts and am quite happy with it, they shipped it within a day. Again, I'm not an expert but this one looks exactly like the "steel cable" I used to have
