I recently found an abandoned Nacra 5.8 in the woods by my house.. Asked the neighbors and they don't know who owns it and said it has been sitting there for 3-4 years.. I'm going to do some more checking out on it before I haul it away, but I wanted some opinions on this boat.. Anyone ever owned one? It seems to have all the parts with it but no main sail... That's also another reason I want to find the owner is to see if he has the sail stowed away somewhere.. If not where can I find a sail / jib.. Been kinda tough to find anything on these boats in my initial research... I currently have an 81 Hobie 18
Got to be careful with this "found" boat. Might have been reported stolen years ago. Does your state register sailboats? Take the HIN (Hull Number from the sterns) to the agency that would register boats if so, you might be able to get the last owner that way. You could also post the HIN here and we could decode it to tell the model year.
Who owns the woods? If the property belongs to you then the boat might also, consult a lawyer.
The 5.8 is a really nice boat, you'll find it similar to your Hobie 18, but bigger and more powerful. There were two versions of the Nacra 5.8, regular and 5.8 NA, (NA for North American) had a taller mast and bigger jib with a bridal foil (metal wing between the bows) so the jib could start lower.
Interesting situation, keep us updated on what happens.
Cool stuff like that never happens to me. Whenever I find a boat in the woods it's always a stripped rotted out 1974 hobie 16... :) That's Nice boat if it is reasonably complete!
I'm not planning on taking the boat until I find the rightful owner. I've called the person who has the land for sale close to where it is and the neighbor's don't own the boat. I have gotten the registration number off the stickers on the boat as well to check everything with the state before I do anything.
It must be the NA model as it has the metal bridal across the hulls. I checked on it again to see what kind of soft spots it had. Pretty solid for the most part, but I did find a few.
I also want to contact the owner to find out if he has the main sail or jib for the boat. The rigging looks great and the blocks that are for the main sail and jib are very nice.
Edit: put them up on photobucket and got them posted... see below
Why can't I have "finds" like this. That Nacra would be in my yard already if it was in my neck of the woods, done all legal. Go to your local License Department or log on to your State Dept of Revenue and download the "Abandoned Vehicle Manual", talk to your local police department or even your local Water Patrol. Just get that boat outta the woods and into the water, keep us informed.
Update: Talked with the Real Estate Agent and he said it's either the guy that owns the land's boat or a friend of his. He said he was going to get in contact with him tonight and ask what he wants to do with the boat.. Should have more info tomorrow.
Sorry for the late reply I haven't been on the site lately.
No luck on the Nacra.. the real estate agent that is trying to sell the property isn't the friendliest guy I've ever talked to and wasn't willing to give me any info on the property or who might possibly own the boat. I have the guy's name who is is registered to but have no way of getting in contact with him. The boat still sitting in the woods with even more weeds and trash pilling up on it... Just sad.
Been concentrating on my H 18 lately had a little mishap with it and had to bail off of it in a squall and it got a little torn up. I'm in need of a new traveler now!
