Nacra 5.2- your appraisal please

Hey guys, I ran across this Nacra 5.2 earlier on craigslist. Would you mind telling me what you think about it? I'm concerned about the paint job and structural integrity of a '79 cat. I think the price is a little high too considering the condition is so unknown.

Price is a little high compared to most 5.2s (which are fairly common.) Paint is expensive, and could be, in part, the reason for the higher cost.

However, black paint.

$2500 does not seem out of range for a well maintained, newly painted boat.

If the sails are good, and the hulls are strong, and the trailer is in the shape it is claimed ... all seems reasonable to me.

And if you like "Jet Black".

any little scratch is going to show white...

$2.5k is halfway to something like a hobie tiger if you want a crewed boat, and you'd get your money back on that if you sold it next year...

for a solo boat you'd probably get a newer hobie17 for the same
Zach,
Aren't you moving to Florida? Your arse will hate you, and disown you if you buy a black boat in Florida.

I'm no expert but the black could cause structural problems later because it is going to get ridiculously hot any time you sail it even if you do store it covered. I think it would get hot enough to start breaking down the hulls. Can anyone correct me if I am wrong?

I used to own a 5.2 and it was a great solo boat. I wanted to paint it blue but everyone I talked to told me I was nuts to do anything but white in Florida. I settled for a thick blue stripe down each hull. It was no where near as "pretty" as this boat but it was structurally sound. I sold it for $800. I've regretted it ever since.

You can find white ones N5.2 for less money, between $950 and $2000, depend how far you want to drive.

The price is not out of line, but there are some caveats.
I second the comments on black paint in Florida, plus scratches will start to look terrible. On th eothe rhand, if you want to camp with your cat, you will not need a frying pan.
There are a few other points as well. That '79 has the old skinny DS rod/V strap. They were prone to breakage. I have one sitting in my shop that is snapped in half. They also used the 1 1/4" mast ball, not impossible to find/make, but scarce.
Can't tell from the photo, but it probably also has the non captive mast base. Does not appear to have had any upgrades done since '79.
It still has the original centre tube, & I see the beam caps are missing. To me, the value(in the vendors mind) is mostly in the paint & trailer.
It may be in good shape, or, as Phil said on Duck Dynasty, "make up can cover a lot of evil Cole Man."
The 5.2 is no slouch, & carries a pretty good Portsmouth for a mature boat.

Thanks guys. I expected your responses but wanted to be sure.

Still on the hunt...I'm looking at probably a newer (90's-00's) Hobie 16 or something of similar size and simplicity.
