Go to your local water dept - see if they have a piece thats broken on one end or a cut off that they cant use. BTW Stuff they have to get rid of they must PAY to dispose of it, so giving it to you saves them money !!! They also buy in bulk so they may can save you money even if you have to buy a good piece

I found one at a pipe supply place that was in their scrap pile. They let me have it for free. Had several to pick from.

The tube is one thing, but when you look at the price for end caps you see why people end up making their own. Schedule 40 12 inch caps are about $50 each, also Schd 40 pvc weighs over 10 lbs per foot.

Has anyone tried making a tube out of PVC HVAC Duct pipe? It's cheaper and weighs less than 5 lbs per foot.

I use this, give or take an inch in diameter. It came with my trailer...I'm not sure I'd have dropped that much on it, but it sure is handy. If you could find someone to split the cost w/ and cut it in half, you'd just have to make some caps for it, which isn't all that tricky (think internal), and you'd be good to go for $150 or so.

I keep my spinnaker/snuffer bag/pole/hoop all in it -- I don't have to take any of it apart. Just slide off beam, slide into tube. Done.

Edit:
Oh, right. Link.

I had the wants for a nice sail tube for a long time. There's a guy out there on one of the boards that built a nice one, painted it grey, put a round nose cap on it and called it a 'Storepedo'. Wow...Cool. So, I got a big piece of PVC - expensive and really heavy. Decided against that - so I bought a cardboard sonotube with the idea of sealing it with fiberglass and epoxy, along with turning wooden end caps from plywood and glassing the whole thing - along with a nice length of piano hinge for an access hatch. Then I saw a company online that makes plastic concrete form tubes too. I have since given up on the whole concept and spent $75 on a zippered sail bag on ebay. I can get away with this easier since I don't have a boom. A guy in Colorado makes them. Now I just bungee the sails in their neat, windproof bag on top of the boat. A big plastic tub takes care of the rest - life jackets, trap gear, rudders, etc.
