I'm contemplating adding a spin. I have found a local carbon fiber rig & sail, end pole set up, the advice so far is they are not the preferred way to go.
What are the differences, (besides the obvious that one is middle & one end)?
What are the pros/cons of end vs mid?
Can I easily change the snuffer to a mid pole setup, & still use mostly the same parts?
When it comes to the actual kite, what should I be looking for?
I only know there are symmetrical & asymetrical.
Again differences, pros/cons. I think I read about Andrew preferring one because you can gybe the sail?
Our water is starting to get chilly, had to pull out the wetsuits for a 40 mile run on Wed. f I fly down there,(and bring mucho rum & beer) can anyone show me first hand how it all goes together & works?
Please PM

To add to Bacho's comments, a lot of the new setups for midpoles are using two patches now. Longer sock under the tramp. If you don't want to modify your tramp for the retrieval sheet, I can show you a way to do it.
Thanks for the info & offer. I'll keep it in mind.
At this point, I don't know enough about them to ask intelligent questions re rigging
After I see one actually operate, I'll be able to make some decisions.

The I17/I20 (and I18 I'd have to assume) end pole setups (earlier models) are extremely simple. I'd take a look at one of them, or sail one if you can. They can use some of the more modern upgrades w/ the hardware & line placements, but they do a great job of showing the concept in a concise way.
It would be good to know what parts you have on hand. The most expensive are the hoop, snuffer bag, and spinnaker. You want an asymmetric kite. The pole is easy, sunfish upper masts work well. Anyway, go take a look at the SNU setups they work well, and are reasonably priced in all fairness. This is an expensive system to retrofit onto an older boat I should add, $1200 for the kite, $500 for the hoop and sock, $300 for other bits. Time to start shopping used. I have some excellent spinnaker blocks available for less than new (and yes I have an ad).
I did just that, this I18 for sale in Quebec. It looks to be the same setup as I was contemplating. http://qc.kijiji.ca/c-Vie…364298&Keyword=catamaran
I decided against an Inter 18 because I solo most days, & the daggers would be trouble getting out of the bay I'm on, at least for the first 1/2 mile. If they had centerboards, i think I'd try one.
Thanks for the info Sam. I was looking at an entire boat,(not the one above)(as if I need another one on the dock, but hey that;s a different discussion!) It came with all the parts, carbon toilet bowl on the end of an 11' pole, brand new kite & all the rigging. He bought the boat brand new 10 years ago. The kite looked like it had never ever been used. My spider sense said there's gotta be something wrong for it to look brand new after 10 years. Even the attachment patches did not look like a line had ever been tied to them. Not knowing anything about them, I figured I'd do some research before writing a check for the boat. It was the same boat as Andrews, asking 6K, with trailer.
I've decided to get some hands on experience before I leap, & find out if soloing a kite is more trouble than it's worth.
Thanks for all the intel guys, I now know 4 times what I did before...of course 4 x zero is still Dnot a lot

Whereas this Inter appears to be mid pole rig. http://qc.kijiji.ca/c-aut…er-18-W0QQAdIdZ478433900

I understand that now, I assume Philps solution for the sock under the tramp involves a turning block(s) to route the line back to the front.

Aren't you up somewhere about my neck of the woods? I'm in Toronto and I'd be happy to show you the carbon end pole setup on my 2002 F18. It's incredibly simple and works well. I'm not usually out in swells big enough to scoop up any water with it . . . these days we could even take it for a spin (so to speak) if you're game.
That would be great. My main residence is in Caledon, easy drive down the clubs in the
Big Smoke.
Please send contact details via PM., or text me @ 416 eight-oh-five 8-five-5-seven.
We decided this w/e that we are not quitting til the snow flies!
We used to scuba dive in some pretty cold water. We dug out the gear, & are equipped down to 5C.
Thanks.

Cat junkie was kind enough to take me over to Water Rats Sail club today & show me firsthand how his F18 works. It is pretty simple.
Also got to see a bunch of Nacra 17's & the Grand Kahuna, a Nacra 20 Carbon. All those carbon masts make me itch...maybe my kid can give up med school & go get a job!
Thanks for all the help, I now know how they actually set up & work.
