Wow, there is some crazy wildlife around the Channel Islands.

http://cdn.grindtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/oarfish1.jpeg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ef/Enormous_Sunfish.jpg/762px-Enormous_Sunfish.jpg

While that Oar Fish is extremely unusual and usually found dead, the beachcat sailors who have made the crossing have often encountered giant Sunfish (Mola Mola) which are a big hazard because of their size (the one in the picture on the right was 3,500 pounds) and the fact that they like to float near the surface. Also big Sea Turtles can cause a lot of damage.

Uh, the people in that picture are wearing Derbys, Victorian shirts and the occasional set of knickers. Is this photo from the other turn of the century, or have fashion styles stagnated a bit on Catalina? :)

A good reason to sail skeg hulls. File them down a bit thinner than normal, sail as a fleet....instant sushi.

I saw a sunfish do a full breach off La Jolla. It was so big that my first thought was that it was a whale but it breach again and my buddy said it was a sunfish. It would be bad to hit one of those...bad for the fish and for the boat.

We saw a pretty big shark breach on the way to Catalina. I let out the sheets to watch as it circled around behind our boat (it didn't seem to notice or care we were there). The fin was 8 to 10 in tall.

There are some big fish in those waters.
