Hobie 13 setup

Hi,

At our club we have 2 Hobiecat 13's. The were used for the youngsters
to learn catsailing.
They have been neglected for quite a while because of the lack of kids.
We also have 4 optimist dinghy for the young ones.
Past friday a 14 year old boy came back to shore in a optimist, and passed me
grumbling " I'm to big for this stupid dinghy..."

So I asked his parents if it was ok to take him for a sail on my P 18-2, when we
came back I saw the biggest grin ever on a face.

That made me decide to restore at least one of the H13's. Started with some new
gelcoat on the bottoms of the best looking 13, picked the best tramp and rudders
and replaced a broken tiller. Its pretty much completed and the kid had his
first ride last sunday.

Being a Prindle sailor, I have some questions about the Hobie 13.

First. A picture of the downhaul system would be nice, I improvised something
last sunday but have no clue how the original system was.

Second. The jib halyard system. There's a block in the mast and a block on the
bridle, but where do I secure the halyard and where does the remaining
line go ?

Third. There's a single trapeze setup on the H13, How and where goes the
bungee cord setup ?

Fourth. Is a main-halyard really necessary ? Last sunday I raised the main by hand
with the cat on its side, and hooked it. Simply because there's no space to
stash the amount of line on the tramp.

Pictures and advice are very welcome!! Promised the kid he'd sail the H13 next
weekend.

regards, André

First we need to identify exactly what your Hobie 13's are. In the USA Hobie had the 3.5, 14, and 16 which all share pretty much the same rigging.

Here's a Hobie 3.5 sitting on a Hobie 14 for comparison.

Is your boat like those or maybe it's a Euro model we didn't have here.

Damon, just realized Hobie has a factory in France, so its probably a
Euro-model.
The 3,5 in you're picture has a "closed" tramp. Ours have a different style.
Will take some pictures tomorrow. And do a search for a vin-number.
This kid needs to sail !!

On the tack of the main, there's only 1 meter of dynema line, no block.

Dave,
Its not a Dragon, it is a 1989's Hobie 13, build number 74 and
made in Toulon, France.
I hace searched the internet for a manual, but no succes.
Maybe I look into a H 3,5 for a matching parts.
