Dave farmer's point about keeping clips short is a good one. We use a painters extension handle for a lot of shots. We just hold it at different angles. Here is an example:

The suction mount for gopro works well on the hulls for some wet action shots. I find the pole mounted to the bows videos very boring to watch. The best vids are the ones taken from other boats. I understand it is not always possible, but they are great to watch. We have mounted the suction to the daggerboard above the deck. It works well.

This was just some small lake sailing but I had the rare opportunity to video my daughter and her grandfather. I converted most of it to slow motion, the clips were short as was the video.
