Calling H-18 Experts!!! What is the difference between a Hobie 18 vs. 18SE vs. Magnum vs. SX?

This website says the beam on the SX is 80 inches. Can that be right? 6.6 ft? Inside dia. maybe?

http://boatspecs.iboats.c…SX_18__2002/bp/66b155141

This website says the SX has a 19" taller mast and high aspect mylar sails. Does the taller mast mean more sail area?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobie_cat

With the for mentioned changes to the 18SX would it still be Hobie 18 B-class legal or does that make it A- class now?

So much confusion between these models, can someone help clear the waters?

I'm far from an expert, but I think you can find some good info on the Hobie 18 FAQ page here: http://www.hobiecat.com/f…ewtopic.php?f=13&t=12780

Beam width is the same for both at 8ft. Sail area is 20sqft less on the SX but is much higher aspect ratio and is probably a "faster" sail. Picture on the FAQ page shows an SX with an optional spinnaker.

Informal racing against SE is up to the guys you're sailing with. However, I'm certain it wouldn't be allowed in a Hobie sanctioned event.

Rehmbo is correct. Main sail less sqft but taller. No the SX has no legal Hobie class but you do see one every so often in open points races.
