Florida 300 First Look

I'm here in beautiful Islamorada at the Islander Resort and will be following the race up the coast. It's a tough job but someone has to do it.

Today some of the teams are doing a kind of practice race to make sure everything is sorted with their boats and to get a feet for the current local condituons. The defending champions, Kirk Newkirk and Tom Whitehurst of Key Sailing definitely have their game faces on and intend to defend. They have been here practicing since Sunday.

Checked out the Flying Phantom yesterday on the beach and what a machiNE it is. I was surprised how large volume the hulls appear to be since they aren't intended to be in the water! Today I'll get to see it on the water. Conditions are perfect winds 10 to 15.

Stay tuned.

Meant to mention that the other foiler, John Casey on the Nacra 20 FCS, instead of trailering the boat from its base in Miami is sailing it down to Islamorada today. That's one way to beat the Hwy 1 traffic!
