Modern smartphones are way to expensive to take out sailing,
they are hard to monitor in the sun. So, why don't you go
this way?
After toasting 2 samsung "waterproof" cellphones and one smartphone
in a aquapack, I ran into this...
A Ruggear RG100. Its cheap, under a €100,00
I keep it in my pfd in a kitchen zippered plastic bag made for
freezing food. But I can stil use the dials.
I change the plastic bag every month or so.
It has a dedicated prepaid simcard.
Battery-life is 2/3 weeks on standby, and it is loud, very loud.
Works like charm.
Of course its for emergency situations only.
For "toying" I have these other gadgets;
In the tramp-pocket there's a Standard Horizon SX280
For tracking I use a Garmin Forerunner 101 wristwatch, strapped to
the boom. Turn it on and never look at it.
Digital speed display is the old Garmin foretrex 201, but
I take it less often because I just wanna sail and not be bothered.
Regards, A
