Application of Registration Letters and Numbers

Does anyone have any tips or tricks as to properly line up individual vinyl letters and numbers? I have some peel and stick on types and was wondering if I should maybe use the soapy water method to slide them around to line them up?
Thank you for any help.

Well, I actually got the new registration numbers and letters lined up by measuring off of the stripes on my boat, measured, measured and then measured some more!!!! Then I used painters tape to make a guide line, used a soapy water spray so I could move the letters around to the precise spot I wanted. Done!!!! They look awesome!!!! I used Shoreline numbers and letters that are kinda redish/orange at the tops and fade to yellow and have a redish outline. They match the yellow of my boat and the orange and red in the stripes on the sides of the hull and the sail. I will try to post a pic later.
Anyhoo, I figured it out and learned something along the way. It was a good day.
Now that she is legal, it's time to sail!!!
