Thanks mowers

I went to the lake today where my boat is stored at our local club. The mowers had gouged the port hull and pretty much destroyed the starboard hull with about a six inch hole and tear. Then they tried to cover the damage by duct taping an American flag over the hole. Plenty of "John Deere green" paint transfer. Damon has a picture, I'm still not tech savvy enough to post them.

Yep, 5.7. Haven't had a chance yet to do anything except take it home. A club officer was there when the damage was found so hopefully the club insurance or mowing contractor will come through. The good news is that through our small cat community I know where to go for quality repairs at a fair price. I was planning todo a really good cleanup/refurbish at some point so I guess that just became now.

I had a mower do that do my hot tub once. It still worked though. I'd be pissed if that happened to my boat. The only solution might be to add a few land mines to the property and call them back.
Well that sucks! I hope the people responsible do the right thing and pay for the repairs. They really should've let someone know about the contact and damage when it happened instead of trying to cover it up. Hope it all works out.

They are probably insured. Normally the customer (club in this case) will require a certificate of insurance from the mowing contractor before any work is done. The club's insurance carrier would require a CI from all subcontractors or they will charge the club for the needed insurance. I've been mowing for 30 years and residential customers are the only ones who don't ask for a CI. You should be fully reimbursed for a professional repair by a boat yard or other fiberglass repair place.

...or the full value of the boat. With these older catamarans, you could total the boat pretty fast using a full price repair.

I've been assured by our club officers that the mower should pay the damages. If that's in fact true the only question remaining is do I go ahead and get a full Awlgrip paint job while it's in. I've seen some nice work by one of repair guys. Then some new sails and I'll have a nice $6-7k boat that will be worth about 3-4K. But who can put a price on a shiny almost new cat?!

Tom, I do have my decals still and when I get either polished or painted I will put them on...also, a guy here took pictures of my old style graphics and had them reproduced locally for a good price. Option for future needs.

Yours do look very nice

why do you want paint?

I wish mine wasn't painted for many reasons
I don't necessarily want paint, but it's an option. We have a local guy six hours away that's done some beautiful awlgrip jobs on cats. I most like will have the damage fixed, and then have all dings from 28 years of sailing faired, sanded, and polished. But he does some really good work.

cool!
to each their own

my big gripe is - this stuff (awgrip and imron) is pretty hard to touch up
you need an air system to get it right, and this stuff is pretty caustic to sand .. i don't have gear for either
plus mine is grey (hot) and i hate that
I understand touch up part for sure because it's not a matter of if, but when. For that reason I'd probably stick with white on at least the bottom half of the hulls if I had it painted. The guy who will likely do my repairs has a full paint shop and has done some really nice work on at least 3 Nacras that I know about and probably more, including his own.

Most likely it won't make $$ sense to paint it but so far we're just talking about repair costs. Most likely when we figure a good estimate I'll then just say do whatever else you can with X dollars. It got its normal amount of dings and nicks for an 89. Not bad at all but worth addressing since it's gotta go in anyway and I gotta haul it six hours to someone who can do the work.

I think we will get the hulls as white and shiny as we can for a good price, put on the graphics I bought last year, and hydroturf the decks.

gotcha!
that sounds like a great plan

shiny and new is only skin deep - and fading :)

I refinished my 5.7 with the Interlux Perfection. It's toxic and tough to work with, but it does blend okay with roll and tip method. I have added bottom repairs after the first year, and the refinish over the top blended so it doesn't show and the finish stays amazing, with great reflection and brightness. Nothing else on the lake comes close and I get a lot of compliments.

Special credit to Tnell for arranging the purchase of the graphics and a cool NACTA Racing cap. I have really enjoyed my boat since putting on the graphics. I have since added the Hydroturf diamond cut decks and the look and feel is very satisfying.

Good news, I finally had a good conversation with the responsible party (not the mower driver). He assured me that he's gonna take care of it in full. I'm going to take a little drive to get to someone I trust for the work, but that's ok. While it's in the shop it's going to get faired and awlgripped and hydroturfed. Just have to decide on the colors. Probably a new square top (pentex?) and a nice new jib to follow.
