Traveller sheet mess

How do you manage the traveller sheet free end? Both boats have them and I hold tiller and main sheet with the traveller sheet nearby. It seems every tack I am having to find the traveller sheet and lay it out patallel.to the rear beam. Has anyone found a way to make this easier? Maybe dual sheets, one to each side like used on larger boats.

We use the main sheet other end as a traveller sheet. In theory it's simple, but not So much URL.

I tie traveler and main sheet ends togerher. They are different colors, maybe that’s relevant. Different diameter too. On my previous boat i used the same sheet for both, i don’t remember having issues. Do you play with the traveler often? Every tack? I forget about it most of the time
I have been experimenting with traveller settings so adjusting often. 2017 seemed to be the year of shifty winds near us.

I use very different lines for each
my main is salsa (very colorful), my traveler is a solid racing sheet

they are tied together at the bitter end so i can access the traveler from the wire if needed

upwind - i almost never touch it (unless overpowered)
reaching it is out somewhere about 1/2 way to the end (depending on if it's a beam or broad reach)
downwind it is all the way out

This is the way our boat is rigged as well. I set it similar to MN3, except I’ll tack more when headed downwind.

The main "issue" would be that in a big puff, sometimes it is better to travel out vs. sheet the main out ... if your lines are all the same color, and you are about to capsize and look down for your blue traveler line in the pile of blue line, you may grab the wrong end and sheet the main out ... or accidentally grab the middle of the sheet and have no ability to uncleat either - and then you swim :)

Yup.
Different colors and smaller diameter on the traveler line, though it's important that the traveler line have some "heft" to it for quick uncleating in a hard puff.
Main sheet in the hand always, traveler line across the thigh.

Understood. I use the traveler to de-power in literally emergent situations racing in the Pacific.

Beautiful ocean, I just don't like swimming in it 20 miles from shore, where a huge gust from around Santa Cruz Island needs immediate attention. They happen so fast the tiller is useless and the 9:1 mainsheet is just a bit too slow, even with new low friction/small diameter cordage.

Uncleating a single traveler line is fast, but even so the cat is sometimes heeled to 40 degrees before I get it de-powered.

I’ll try. I recently started to focus more on the jib as second measure. Sometimes it keeps pushing, I thought it was the drag of the main but was underestimating the jib. See this video, at 1:59 the main is loose but it doesn’t help. I never played the jib, at 2:06 I played the tiller out of instinct because that water is COLD... The fall is not part of the technique.. icon_cool The vibration on the camera is due to missing batten on the jib.

because you are still traveled to center.
the foot of the main is flopping around but your mid and upper sails are still in POWER UP position / angle of attack

I really like the top down video - really shows the shape of the sail and leech - i will need to do that one weekend

How does that work on a beach cat? Seems like a lot of line running around??
I like it better than the stock traveler setup. I have never liked that bitter end of the main sheet through the traveler car setup. Sheet management on my tramp is still a work in progress.

There's an additional benefit:
After sailing and taking the boat out of the water, I remove the mainsheet but the traveler sheet stays there and I use it to tie the tiller bar and keep the rudders centered. Better for taxiing the boat..
