I am new to sailing and have a Trac16 I am trying to clean up and put on the water. I have down loaded the owners manual and it looks like I am missing the mainsail halyard hook and jib sail hook. I would like to ask anyone who has one if they could take a few pics of these parts and maybe help with a pattern and dimensions so I can fabricate these parts. The owners manual calls for 3/16 halyard. Is this enough line/strong enough line to support the mainsail and cleat off if I do not use a halyard hook? Planning to put on the water for the remainder of this summer and fully restoring this winter and spring. Thank you for any help.

Any decent quality low stretch dyneema, (or Vectran), cored Line is sufficient. You don’t need to worry about strength, the breaking strength is way more than you can ever pull.

I think he is asking if the halyard is strong enough if he cleats it off at the mast base and goes sailing.

I am not familiar with the main sail hook on a trac. The manual here stops at the battens for the main, but Murrays should have what you need.

just note that using a hook at the top of your mast = a 1:1 pull on your hardware when you downhaul your sail

running a halyard up your mast, back down and cleating (anywhere) now = 2:1 and this doubles the stress on your mast

Yes, 3/16” is plenty strong. Just check the stretch data, & get a line with little stretch. You will never break a 3/16” dyneema/vectran line on a 16’ boat, unless you chaffe it to death.

Thank you for the help. Let's me get it out on the water with out worry. I would still like to find or fabricate the mainsail halyard hook just to put it back together the way it came. Maybe after some time on the boat, and or some time to look at other boats I may come up with something different or better.

Yes the 1:1 vs 2:1 is what I was concerned about and the reason for questioning line strength. I have replaced all control lines, if just for piece of mind.

gunbuilder - I have a trac 16, do you still need images of anything? The jib and mast rigging can be a little frustrating if not rigged just right. I've got it down to 40 min setup/tear down from on the trailer to rigged and on the water.
