The most time consuming part of rigging my NACRA 5.2 is getting the split rings into the clevis pins on the forestay and stanchions (Shroud not stanchion*). Would it be safe to use a quick release pin like the bottom of the jib uses? https://www.sailrite.com/Quick-Lock-Pin-1-4-x-1-1-2-by-Suncor
I have used them for both shrouds and forestay on my Hobie 16 and never had one fail.
don't ask me why but I've gone back to Pin & Ring Ding on my shrouds but still use Quick Pins for attachments for Main & Jib Sheets as well as for the Hiking Stick
I have quick pins on the forestay and jib and they are tied together so you can't drop one. Still use standard pins on the shrouds since they actually hang loose at times.
it is not advisable to use a quick release on a critical connection
they can be accidentally used by someone who is clueless (crew or dumb kid on a beach who have no concept of what pulling "this" would do)
also they tend to seize if left in the elements especially if left in use
that page shows 3 models:
you absolutely should NOT use the top 2 type for a stay connection, both can easily be removed accidentally (eg a person sliding around the tramp during a hard tack/capsize) - lose one of them on the water and unless you have spare parts - your day is done
I have used quick pins in the past - i had a pin fail in my boom clew, at the worst possible time (just upwind of a low bridge during a tack - ALMOST blown backwards into the bridge - crew saved the day) due to a quick pin failure
i don't use them any more - if i did it would be on a non critical connection (downhaul, jib blocks to deck, etc)
I couldn't agree more with DK above - i recommend a ring and tape (shorts have a magnatic attraction to pins and rings and get snagged easily. when that happens you risk your ring. when you risk yoru ring you risk your pin coming free - then you risk your mast.... - who cares about an extra min or 2 vs an on the water/beach demasting or other criticial failure
lots of cheap knock offs and chineese garbage - i don't trust my mast / mainsail / etc to cheap chineese crap
may look fine, last 3/4 as long but in the end .. i will pay for the highest quality components i can get
