Self tacking conversion

Looking to put a self tacking set up on the boats. The Harken Crossbows are slick but $900 is pretty steep. I stumbled upon a similar part used as a traveler on the Tasar dinghy. https://westcoastsailing.net/tasar-traveler-track/ for $90.

I need to figure the radius of the track vs the jib and mounting. Anyone tried this or another homebrewed self tacking track/set up?

Thanks and Happy New Year.

John,

Ronstan will custom bend tracks to a given specification. You still need support brackets, mounting brackets and the traveler car. The track has to be able to pivot to align the car to the required jib sheet angle.

For a little under $500 you can get a nice setup from eXploder, which includes a heavy duty bent Ronstan track, the traveler car and the brackets. Yes, it’s a far cry from $90, but doing all this yourself will easily come to the same price: http://catparts.pl/en/product/jib-track/

PM me if you are interested, I am helping to bring some F18 parts in from Poland (at cost, no profit on my end) for those in need.

Hi John
Have you posted this question on the TornadoCat group?
https://groups.io/g/TornadoCat

I can send you diagrams of the self tracker, photos, etc.

Cameron, I have not. I was going to do the Nacra first, but if its easier to find part for the Tornado that can go to the front of the line

Hi John,
This might give you some hints. For the Tornado 180cm radius works. I made a small roller bender to be able to fine tune the bend of the Harken track. The lowbudget alternative is to use the low profile 22mm track, backed by a 7/8"x1/4" alu rod. Have used the low 22mm track w/o rod, with fittings to the beam every 10 cm, on my 5.5 with F18 jib.

John, will you need to give up sail area when going to the self tacker on the 5.0? Just curious.

Big fan of the self tacker on the I20

Probably a Nacra 16 jib will fit as selftacker jib on the 5.0, you will lose 0.5sqm though. Will rebuild my widened 5.5 with F18 rig, for single handing next season. Will then use a A-cat main together with a Nacra 16 selftacking jib(5.0m luff, 1.3m foot).

I will give up some area to clean up the tramp.

There was no loss in sail area on the I20, they used the same jibs initially. Not sure about the Tornado.
The self tacking Tornado jib is actually 0,15sqm larger than the Classic.

Mac had a supercat with a self tacking jib on a straight track. Not conventional but it worked fine. That wouldn't be too bad to put together with ebay parts.
