My mast fell down on dry land one day and broke the top of the mast. The first thing is how does a forestay just come loose after looking at the jib I had a push pin in one of the holes and i had a shackle in another hole, it almost looks like someone came and pulled the pin and unscrewed the small shackle and then put it back on the, but anyways has anyone fixed a comptip re fiberglassed it back? what is this design for why didn't they just use a Hobie 16 mast

Would need a little better description about the extent of the damage to say for sure, but if by “broke” you mean the comptip snapped off, then it’s done - you will need to replace it. If there is only minimal damage, then it could possibly be repaired if you’re experienced at working with fiberglass, but keep in mind, there is a lot of load on the mast and so sailing with a structurally compromised mast would be a significant gamble.

The reason for the comptip is that it is a safety feature implemented by Hobie back in the 1980’s resulting from numerous lawsuits involving sailors hitting powerlines with their masts. The Hobie 16 mast also uses a comptip.

Thanks for the reply, yes it is broken in half! Well, I guess that would be a reason for Lawsuite but if power lines are not clearly marked that would be another law suite, I just can't believe this mast fell on its own I had 2 pins in the forestay because I was a lazy day and didn't put it back in the toolbox and there was room to pin it in the forestay. I think someone did this but anyways this sucks those tips are not cheap!

Check the forums on the Hobie website. There is a recent thread about replacing the Getaway mast with a Hobie 16 mast. If you want to go that route, you may be able to find a used H16 mast cheaper than a new comp tip.

Plus a lot more buoyant if you choose not to use the masthead float.
