i figured lets start a new thread....
OK.. here it is.. i spliced a 13" piece of 4mm spectra into a pigtail on friday night. cut off 6' of mainsheet...
now my blocks have about 1' of gab between the top and bottom (reducing the 4' of gap)
i have less distance to travel between the top and bottom blocks. i can now sheet in and or out with 1 arm and never need to get more than 1 arm full for sheeting action!!!! :)
It was a leap of faith (and i had a backup) since 4mm is so thin and it was my first time with a splice and lockstich that could be disaster if it failed. Next spliced are for my spin bridal and trap lines..
PS it heald up without problem in 15knots..

Looking good. I do have a question on your dimensions. You reduced your block gap from 4' to 1' by adding a 13" pigtail? Seems like your block are now 3' apart instead of 4', and now a foot from the boom.
Also I still don't understand how it enables you to not have to pull in as much line, but either way glad it worked for you.

i was never good at math... thats why i was an economics major!
i will take actually measurements next weekend if i remember... but i think the "fuzzy math" has something to do with the recent solar eclipse, lunar pull, and intra dimensional displacement standard deviations... but as i said, i am not good at math -

While you were splicing did you taper your mainsheet? I saw on the other site you were planning to..

not yet,
I couldn't get clear guidance on how to best splice it.
I could easily strip the cover of a double braid and whip it.. but i want 9mm, 12 strand, dynema blend, single braid (robbline racing sheet or similar) spliced to 4mm dyneema, not a stripped cover.
so i asked my friend at JSI (newjsi.com) if they could. They never had before but made it and gave me the demo piece. it is to stiff (since they ran it through a sewing machine as reinforcement)
ASP bid it at $85 with materials/labor/shipping. but since i made the pig tail my dimensions are different.

I ordered some fids and I'm going to try splicing some NE Salsa 9.5mm to some 1/4" dyneema...at least in theory. I ordered a scrap of SK-60 for this but it didn't make the delivery somehow so I may have to order something different...
Anyway, I downloaded all the splicing guides I could find (Sampsons, Yale's, NERope's) and I'm going to give it a whirl. If it's not a complete failure I'll take pics and let you know how I did it.
