I was looking to put carpet in my daggerboard trunks to provide some padding for the boards on my H18. Right now there is nothing, just the fiberglass trunk against the boards. I was thinking of using indoor/outdoor carpet but didn't know what to use to glue it in place.
Anyone have any experience or thoughts on the subject?

Scott,
Contact cement is the best product for gluing I/O carpet to the side rails on H16s. I did my recently and they are holding up perfectly.
I don't know how the contact cement will react to gelcoat though. I would take a small amount of the glue and apply it to an inconspicuous spot to see how it reacts. My guess is it will do fine as it is a cold reaction.
You may want to rough up the gelcoat slightly before you apply the contact cement.
Apply the cement to the each surface and allow it to partially dry - a light tack to the touch. Then mate the two surfaces. Once they contact it will not come off easily. The glue works by bonding to itself so be sure of where you putting it together.
Good luck.
BTW you can get the contact cement at Lowes or Home Depot. -

Scott,
I just did this on the N20 a few months ago and I'm doing a second N20. I used Contact Cement by DAP Weldwood which I bought at Home Depot or Lowe's, can't remember which. A one inch strip of indoor outdoor carpet is what Performance sent me. I paid way to much for a strip of carpet.

Sounds like I am going to Lowe's or Depot to try to find a I/O carpet scrap and some contact cement. Think they will cut a 1" strip off their 12' roll for me?

Scott,
I wouldn't advise putting anything like carpet inside the top of the H18 Dagger trunk. I think you'd be asking for trouble, like not being able to raise the daggers when you had to.
Sometime in the 90's Hobie started adding a plastic liner that wraps inside the bottom of the trunk to reduce chipping and tighten up the slot slightly, but it's only like 1/8 inch think and solid.
It's sold as a Hobie part if you want to add it.

Actually Scott, I think that is a good idea. Last week I purchased a yard (4'x 12')of outdoor carpet to line my sail/gear box. Cost a whopping 4 or 5 bucks. Their cutter gives you a perfectly straight, parallel and square piece of carpet (just what I wanted for the box). You could ask the staff to see if he could cut one inch an then 35 inches, and offer to buy the yard. The stuff is great for lining boxes, etc. and is very easy to cut with a straight edge and knife/razor.

Thanks Damon,
Looking in the Hobie catalog looks like the "Dagger well Neoprene kit" is part 60309001.

Lowes has gray outdoor runner carpet about 18-24 inches wide. Just buy a foot. Also, you might want to go to your local jetski dealer and buy footpad adhesive. It is a contact cement for marine environments. Not sure how waterproof Dap or Weldwood is.

It's very waterproof, and designed and intended for waterproof applications.

I use DAP contact cement on my center board gaskets.. it holds up fine.
I used a few small strips of carpet in my H18 wells...but what i found worked best...
tighten up the bungee cord that holds them in place... -

My main concern is the top front and bottom rear corners of the board trunk. Where the boards are pulled against when raised with the bungy pulling the top front of the board forward. So I might just put something in those two locations since that is where most the rubbing occurs. Don't want to make it to much harder to get up and down, just protect the leading and trailing edge of the boards.
