Had the cat out on the Potomac today - WHOOHOO!  Bottom

  • I was wondering if it was time to hang it up for the season, but today turned out great. Temps in the upper 50s, sunny, wind 10-12 mph. It was especially nice to have the wind blowing *across* the river, so I was able to sail away from the dock and then reach for miles downriver without having to tack once. Had a bit of a panic when the breeze died while I was still way down river (and the tide running out too). But then the wind picked up again and I flew right back, with just a couple of tacks. Oh, man, it was fun.

Sounds like a good way to end the summer. I just got my boat out yesterday (Sunday) but wanted to take it out (no wetsuit).

How thick of a wetsuit were you wearing (3/2), (5/4)? I am guessing full length?

Just a thin shorty sleeveless wetsuit for my core. I also had a bunch of layers to go over it - but they spent most of the sail in the tramp bag. I stayed pretty warm mostly because the water was very smooth (no chop) so I didn't get wet at all. If I had capsized I'd have been one chilly willy pretty quick!

    Where do you sail?

  • I need to get a suit to extend the season.

Sail in barnaget bay, just south of toms river. You should check it out, average water depth is around 8 ft, so its usually warm, consistent 10-15 mph winds ssw.
  • I found Barnaget Bay, NJ on Google maps. It looks like a great spot to sail, but it's a bit too far for me to trailer the cat. I think if I was going to drive that far I would head down to the Outer Banks.

I had the Hobie out again last weekend - we had freak warm weather (in the 60s). I should have gone out on Saturday, when we had big winds, but instead waited til Sunday, with just a moderate breeze. Still, I was warm out on the water at the end of November.

I have a full length wetsuit too that I used to use for windsurfing. I haven't used it for sailing - I'm afraid I'd be too hot out of the water.
