Truth or Fiction? Anyone Know?  Bottom

• I was at Mission Bay in San Diego this past weekend and saw a cat sitting on a trailer. Nothing I have ever seen before. It had a large red "Z" on the hulls and Wingz on the side of each cabin. Owner said the boat is a "Z-21". 21' with a cabin in each hull that sleeps two. The boat sits on a trailer with an 8.6 beam and when launched the crossbeams telescope out to over 9'. You just pop in pins to lock. He said he just bought it new from the builder and paid $15K with sails and trailer. This is a lot of boat and I cannot believe the price can be right. Can't find any info about it or the company.
• I've never heard of it, sounds cool though. Please try to get pictures if you see it again.

Fun with Google:

Evidently there is a Ranger Bass Boat named Z21 which returns a lot of results. So eliminate those by doing a -ranger and do a search like
z21 +catamaran -ranger
http://www.google.com/sea…z21+%2Bcatamaran+-ranger

And the only result that is a sailboat is a link to this thread! Google loves TheBeachcats.com

• I found references to something vaguely like that, that was made back in the 70's, called an "R21." Might be somehow related? Sounds like a "used" price though.

Note: their current model is listed as an "R33." Looks fun, but lists for $125K for the base model. icon_eek

• Went out on their web-site and saw the $$ price for a 33'. Ouch...Ouch... I kinda liked the one attached to the link which was for sale locally but McGregor made some disaster boats that didn't market well (why they tried to make a 26 ' cross-over between a power boat and sail boat????)

Here is the link:

Cheers,

• I also forgot. In looking at the sleeping set-up, I would be on topside with a tarp. The narrow berths are too cofin-like.

• as above

what about a rebuild of a reynolds 21

Most notable to Reynolds design credits is his R21 Cat. Reynolds, then age 22, built over 50 of these boats back in 1978 and 1979 before selling the company to pursue the windsurfing market.

Twenty years later many still actively sail the Reynolds 21 Catamaran. A successful design, the Reynolds 21 was clocked at 12 knots in 15 knots of wind at the PMA Worlds in 1978. Not bad for a 1000 lbs boat that had sleeping accommodations for 4 adults and was only 21 feet long.

The Reynolds 21 was also seaworthy. Many R21 sailors ventured hundreds of miles down the coast of Southern California and deep into Baja. Sailors would live months at a time on the R21. The new R33 CAT is a larger, modern day version of this successful little multihull.
