Hobie 16 bottom.  Bottom

  • I am working at one of our hobie 16's it is an '83 boat. last year i did a pretty sketchy bottom job to last me through the rest of the season. After that we won a couple of local races with the boat. and sailed 17.5 knots with 10 liters of water in both hulls. Thats when i did a thorough check and found a hole. It was filled previously, Could be me or the previous owner.

    This is the hole:

Anyone have a method to tackle this?

    Just kidding.

isn't there a very active catamaran community in Denmark ?

I am sure you can find a repair shop or local guidence on how to do it.

otherwise you need to learn how to build up the fiberglass / epoxy and then do a complete bottom job and gel-coat or paint it.

    Yikes! (English word meaning Jeepers!)

That hole is going to take some expert fiberglass work to really do right. You can't patch a hole like that with just filler or epoxy, you need the actual fiberglass cloth put back.

  • Actually the cat fleet here sucks. I am originally from Holland. Where, I think, there is the largest cat to inhabitant ratio in the world.
Here in a radius of 100 miles there are maybe 10 cats.

I have done a very successful bottom job including fiberglass work on our Prindle 18 as well.

But anybody any experience doing these kind of repairs? We can get West epoxy wholesale, so supplies are not a problem.

Uhm, isn't jeepers an English word as well?

    *edit*

BTW, the rest looks like cr*p because I'm stripping the whole bottom and doing a new bottom job actually.

    Just a joke.

Good luck with the repair, please take pictures as you go along and share the results in the Technical Help albums.

This is actually a pretty common problem folks run into with older boats that have been dragged on the beach a lot. So your work now could help the next guy with the same problem.

  • i am sorry and surprised there isn't more sailing there. I guess i had it mixed up with holland. good luck with the repair. As damon said, please take pics and post them here for the next guy (could be me) :)

ps i was in copenhagen (in 1990) and was amazed at the architecture, sculpture and how clean the city was, and how nice every one was. Also lots of beautiful women :) I traveled around a good bit as well and thought it was very nice.. but COLD
  • The job is very simple. Fill all the voids with microballoons & West epoxy first, sand smooth. Then use 2" glass cloth (several layers (4-6). Pete
