Since the Hurricane Ike Destroyed the Texas City Dike in 2008, Where Has Everyone Gone? I have been to Surfside Beach, Quintana Beach, Crystal Beach, and Jamaica Beach... Yet, no Catamaran's on the Beach Anymore? Does anyone have any idea where everyone is going in the Greater Houston vicinity? If so, any insight would be great as I can't find anyone anymore when I take my Catamaran's Out?
Thanks a Million,
gswilson

I am new to Cat sailing. Actually new to sailing in general. I want to learn to sail the Hobie Cats. Where would you suggest I learn? I would like to have mastered the basic principles before investing my own. I do not want to buy a Cat then be stranded on the beech, not knowing how to sail.
Thanks,
Ted

Sounds like you just need to come out and crew with one us to see if its for you. We tend to post up on www.tcdyc.com when we are going to be at the 10 mile spot so keep an eye out there to see when a group will be there one of us would be happy to give you ride! We just started a page on facebook for the 10 Mile spot buts its brand new so not too many members yet but one of us can always tell you if someone will be out at 10 mile when you post up. The facebook page is Surfside Sailing here is the link http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=102681299786970
PS there will be atleast 3 cats there this Sunday they tend to start at 10 am.

Hey Ted
Maybe next time there will be wind! It was nice meeting you yesterday. Keep an eye on tcdyc and the FB page for info. Hopefully next time you go out there will be some wind and boats that actually work! -

Thanks Teddy,
It was nice meeting all of you as well. Well thats life, everyday does not turn out the way you hope it to be. But you try to make the best of it. I made some new friends and learned a little about rigging a Cat. I would say it was a good day.
I will try to go out next week. Meet some people, maybe someone will give me a ride, to see what it is like.
Thanks,
Ted -

Honestly, you just need to make the plunge. I had done a lot of reading about sailing myself but never had any practical experience before my first semi solo trip out. While my family and I were at a resort in Jamaica the resort had 12ft Hobie Cats available free for our use. So my 9yr old daughter and I set out from the beach on our first ever sail. It took me about 1 to 2 minutes to figure out the practicals. To prep yourself just do some light reading on the general basic mechanics of a sail (trimming, letting out, theory of tacking). Then just go try it! After your first trip out you can go out and pick up additional tips on improving your technique. But nothing beats the practical experience of just getting your feet wet for the first time.
