how do I clean out centerboard wells?

I am rebuilding a Prindle 18-2. apparantly it sat in fresh water and got some growth in the wells. anyone have any tips or tricks for cleaning them out??? -

Mix up some Barkeepers friend (Oxalic acid) and use a long bristle brush like for cleaning furnace burners or grills. Make is strong, let soak and a hard spray from hose nozzle.
