  • Vintage, got pics? I ended up getting a Dewalt Worksite radio/charger which runs on a lithium ion 18.1volt battery. That's good for about 2 days of sailing/music before recharging. It's mildly water resistant but I wouldn't want to submerge the thing.

  • Isn't there a small waterproof case for an Ipod that some sailors mount on the boom? This case is clear and has build in waterproof speakers with high quality sound and the controls are accessible without opening it.

  • I was thinking of cannibalising a job site radio like the ryobi I bought from home depot for $29. The radio is very loud, ipod compatable and runs all day of a single charge using power tool batteries that I already have.
  • I took a T-amp and made a semi water-tight enclosure, and hung it in a cat bag inspection port storage bag thing. Then removed the rear inspection ports, bored out the holes a bit, faired myself a platform, and mounted marine speakers. I ran speaker wire through the rear beam, under the bulkhead, and up to the amp, using a trailer hitch harness for the disconnectable wires, and mounted a marine switch in the top of the forward inspection port. 8 rechargable double A's and any mp3 player of choice lasts more than a weekend. The boat also spent plenty of time on its side, with only the cones of the marine speakers keeping it from sinking, and remarkably, it never had issue. Hell, it would just keep on singing.

A buddy of mine took a video of it last summer...It's posted on FB but I've got no idea how to pull a vid from there. For those of you I'm 'friends' with, I put a link on my profile -- you should be able to see it.

  • Now there's the next big Cat upgrade. And I'll tell yo all never be able to cash in on it myself oh well. We need to be able to replace the inspection port lids with built in marine speaker with their own power packs set in the back of the lid. They should be bluetooth compatible and talk to each other wireless as well. One side could even have a waterproof snap in site for a IPod nano or something that would let you control it.

Sounds cool. Couldnt you mount the speakers ON the decklids somehow? so you didnt have to modify the decks?
  • No, the speakers would be inaudible without some sort of enclosure. They also wouldn't stand up to the elements being fully exposed.

The hulls work great as an enclosure, and with some fairing the speakers fit perfectly.

Yup, I do now. I don't know if I'll leave them up for very long but here they are.

  • Yurdle - Brilliant! I now have a project next winter. If you will at some point list the speaker brand you used since they are validated to seal the port on a "roll". Did you hang the mp3 player inside the cat bag with the T-amp as well??

    This is too cool....

  • When I chose the speakers, I opted for cheap, b/c to me that meant 'replaceable'....sadly it never occurred to me that at the point I'd damaged a speaker I'd have likely sunk the boat as well.

I used Boss MR50W...they were even cheaper at the time.

Yep, I just drop the mp3 player into the bag with the amp. I pulled the amp out of it's housing (the standard funky trapezoid shape most T-amps come in) and put it in a radioshack hobby box, and ran the battery pack wire through the marine switch I mounted in the inspection port cover.

I leave the MP3 player (usually a sansa clip) on about 3/4 volume the whole time as I can't access the amp volume, and then use the kill switch on the cover as necessary.

  • I got one of these:

    http://www.amazon.com/Ext…cs&qid=1305842545&sr=8-1

Way more lo-fi, but it's cheap and does the job. I stick my droid in it, turn on pandora, and let it play all day.

  • Flaco,

How's the sound on that unit? Does it loud enough? and how long do the batteries last?

Hey I like the looks of this thing, I couldn't tell by the Amazon description, does it have it's own batteries? Otherwise seems like it would run the phone down pretty quick.

  • I gotta say that if that had been in existence when I started my project I might have gone that route. It's exactly what I was looking for originally, and when I couldn't find it, everything snowballed.
