14 Turbo Forestay and jib rigging  Bottom

  • I recently bought a 14 turbo with a furling system but I have run into some problems with the swivel upper forestay and the shroud with it. With the forestay swivel and line attached the line is much to long
for the jib block lines or they are too long what should the proper length of the line be between the swivel forestay and the jib block and what should be the length of the jib block lines up front Thanks
  • I have an older H14 Turbo that I sail both with the jib and without.

When I sail with the jib there is no separate forestay or shroud. It is part of the jib. The jib head is connected to the upper forestay (with the swivel) which in turn is connected to the mast tang. My upper forestay is about 15" long including the swivel.

If I rig it without the jib, then I use a much longer forestay (shroud) that runs from the mast tang to a chain plate on the bridle wires. This replaces the roller furler, the jib and the upper forestay. The upper forestay with the swivel stays in the sail box with the jib.

Here is a link to Hobie's wire guide that gives some lengths:

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

  • the setup is as above, mast tang - large bell shackle - short forestay (pigtail) with swivel - small bell shackel - jibsail - furling drum - bridle wires.

If you purchased the H14T from someone who sailed then one can conclude that it was sailed with the jib sail, and all wires (standing rigging) are of the correct length. If it was sailed without the jib then as stated above there would be extra rigging, a long forestay with a chainplate.

The jib blocks connect to a wire that runs under the tramp, through the large grommets on the tramp. The jib sheet is connected to the jib at the clew plate very simply, feed line untill center of line is attained, gather both ends of jib sheet and secure to jib clew plate with a simple overhand knot. Check out link below, scroll down to the H14T box and post any other questions.
