Hi ,
Looking for a replacement mast for my P 18-2 , very hard to to find overhere in Europe,
plenty of P18 masts. Not in my neighbourhood though.
So what's the lenght of a P18 mast ? Is it the same (hopefully) as the P 18-2's ??
One of the guys in the marina has a hardly ever used Nacra 580 main for sale. The 580 is
no longer with him.
It's a nice square-head main and I was wondering if its possible to use it on the P 18-2 ,
after a modification by a sailmaker.
Before taking it in considderation I'd like to know the luff lenght of the 580 main.
The seller won't allow me to take it outside to make a measurement , because it's winter ,
snow and showers overhere. He's probably right. And yes, were short on indoor-space at
our little marina.
So, anyone ??
Thanks, Andre

p18 is 28ft and maybe some odd inches. The P-18 might be the same but also might be the same at the p19 which I think is closer to 30ft. With custom rigging lengths you could probably get it work but you might have to use custom sails. or at least p18 sails.

P18 Mast is the same as the P18-2 mast. Prindle/Nacra took
the original 18 rig and mounted it on symmetrical hulls...18-2.
P19 Mast ---- 30.5 ft
P18-2 Mast -- 28.9 ft
P18 Mast ---- 28.9 ft
P16 Mast ---- 26.0 ft -

Thanks a lot ButchG,
Must be the main reason I couldn't find a 18-2 mast .
Now anyone has tips for my Nacra 580 mainsail conversion ?

The Prindle 18 and the 18-2 mast are the same. You can use it for your 18-2

Does anyone knows if this goes for the main and jib as well ? I mean, do the P 18 and P 18-2 mainsail and jib have the same size ?
This would help a lot.

Andre,
You might want to consider that the 580 mainsail is a boomless design. The clew as well as the cut is different than boom rigs. The luff length is much longer than the Prindle (both in mast length and because it is boomless) and the cringle would have to be moved. I would run it by the sailmaker and talk with him first.

The 18-2 has a longer boom than the 18. If you can get an 18-2 boom you're in business.

Or get a p18 boom and use p18 sails. little less sail area maybe but it would work.

Both the Nacra 580 and the 580 Sport pics on the Nacra web site
show them having booms. I believe the 580 has an approx mast
height of 30ft. Trimming the luff and the foot to fit a P18/18-2 rig
would run about $600 at a good sail shop. If the guy GAVE you the
sail it would be a good buy. Otherwise it would be more economical
to purchase a square top main made to fit a P18. Randy Smythe
has made sq-top for a local guy running a P18.
Bastards unbeatable...as long as the boat hold together. I am saving
to get a sq-top main and a self tacking rig for my P19. I truly believe
that with this setup I can beat a N20-OD...as long as my boat holds together -

Thank you all for the replies,
I now learned a P18-2 has the same mast length as a P 18.
Also learned the P 18 has a smaller boom and less sail area.
Still have my P 18-2 sails , so no worries there.
The need for speed made me look for a square head main, since I
ran into the Nacra 580 main at the marina , it looked tempting.
That main is not a boomless design, ( thank you ButchG ) but
the pricing and sailmaker costs aren't realistic all thogether.
Ullman Sails has a similar pentex P 18 main for sale over here in
Europe. Gonna save some money to buy that.
And hope my boat holds together....
again , thanks for the replies
