When it comes to new beach cats it seems like there is a big gap between a Hobie 16 and a F18? You could buy a F16 or F17 but again they are not for the recreational guy too expensive & set up is more complex. I like the H16, H18, P16, P18,P19 style boat but 4 of 5 are no longer made and the H16 could use an overhaul on the hull design and the waves & getaways dont offer enough performance. I really liked the photo of that Hobie Tatoo someone posted awhile back. Give me a fast easy to set up weekend warrior for a decent price our 20+ year old boats have served us well but are tired!! Anyone know of such a boat?

An SL16 is probably a bit of a good mix, even if it's smaller.

nacra offers a large range of recreational cats.
the 500, 570, 580 are all in the range you describe. the 580 even has centerboards like the larger prindles had.
hobie has the pacific as well. an 18 foot skegged boat.

I am going to run the H18 for now but last night my other diamond wire snapped so I may miss another weekend of sailing. I was just thinking how nice it would be to have a newer boat where all the parts were made this decade. Basically Im tired of changing boats because they all require hours of work since they are so old my newest boat was the 1990 5.5sl.
The 580 sounds nice but I know a guy that ordered a new Nacra F17 over 6 months ago and it still hasnt come in. -

Looks like Hobie is not going to bring the Pacific to the USA I love Hobie but they are really not putting out anything new in the USA that I want to own right now. Nacra does have a few choices but performance cat customer service is pretty bad my local dealer complians about it. -

Rob knows how it works at my house! Lol!! On a good note my part is being overnighted from Hobie and should arrive at work tomorrow and the shipping cost didnt hurt too bad. There is a guy in Houston thats been trying to sell a fairly new Nacra SL16 it started at 8k he has reduced it to 6k and its been for sale a long time. When he first listed it I was searching the web looking for info on it and could not find much about it. I'd prefer the Hobie Pearl, or Nacra 580 Sport. Just wish they were available and cheaper.

Yeah a boat with centerboards like the Nacra 580 would be preferred I looked all over for a Prindle 18-2 before I bought my 5.5SL but they are hard to find and I have heard the rudder system can be a pain to get working right. I also looked for a H17 Sport when I had my first H16 and they were nowhere to be found I see some now but same issue they are 20+ years old. An 18' boat with centerboards, good rudder system, jib blocks on front crossbar & a boom and a good supply of spares (Im hard on boats!) thats the one I want who makes it? -

Lookin at the pics a 580 is pretty close. main beam jib sheeting, kick up boards, 19', but boomless (which I think you're underrating)
I've never seen a 580, though.

Not too sure on the boomless rig hopefully you will prove me wrong this summer but I had allot of trouble getting it to uncleated and I tried all kinds of things to correct it I hope you get it figured out.
