Catamarans in Charleston, SC ?  Bottom

  • I just heard back from the local racing association and they don't want me racing my catamaran with their monohulls. Does anybody know of a cat sailing group around Charleston, SC? Are there any other cat sailors in the area?
  • Welcome to the The Beachcats Matt

You might ask this Hobie dealer. I found this by using the forums Quick Search. Search for Charleston, there are several more threads to read.

  • I launch from the beach beside Ft. Moultry. We will be there this weekend (Hobie 16). There should be some other Cats launching from the same beach.
  • Well, I haven't been sailing in Charleston since I finished rebuilding my boat (Hobie 17 Sport) over the winter. I've sailed down in south Florida earlier this year when I did the Miami to Key Largo Race. I'd like to meet up with some other cat sailors in Charleston if anyone else is up for it. Let me know when you guys will be at Ft. Moultry this weekend and I'll try to make it around the same time.
  • We were going to go this weekend, but things fizzled out. I hope to go next weekend. We usually meet at 10:30 or 11 am.
  • Next weekend works better for me too. I had to do some work to my boat and still had it taken apart over this weekend. I sent you a private message the other day and I think I gave you my phone number, just check your beachcats account... I got in touch with a couple other cats who might be able to make it next weekend too.
  • I have to watch the weather. I think they are calling for rain this weekend. If you get a chance check out

I usually refer to the in site the morning before going.
  • Hi guys, I have my 18' Hobie in Lexington. Thinking about launching off Ft. Moultry this 4th of July weekend, but don't have cat tracks yet. Can the cat be hauled all the way to the water on the trailor? icon_cool

  • I looked a Google maps satellite view and it looks like west of the fort there is a parking area that goes all the way to the beach. Anyone else know?

  • I sail in Charleston almost every weekend, and I put in at Ft. Moultry. If you are looking at the Fort from the road, then the road is to the right. It goes to the beach. You don't need beach wheels. The sand is hardpacked. With 8 or more boats the beach tends to get a little crowded. I may be out there on the 4th. Last weekend was a blast.

  • Just acquired a Hobie 16. I wnet to the Road beside Ft. Moultrie and I guess no one was there sailing today. I would like to get with some more experienced sailors to see how they take care of basics

  • I launched from Ft Moultrie about 3 weeks ago on Sunday. There is limited parking as there are other beach goers. When launching the catamaran a beach security guy stopped by on a 4 wheeler and I thought, well there goes my sailing day. However, he was very nice and cool and did not have any issue with launching the cat. He wanted to be sure I kept the two handicaped parking spots clear.

Be careful and watch the tide surge. It moves in quick and leaves only about 10 Yards of beach at high tide. I lost a couple of tie downs and a jib due to the quick surge. I should have paid better attention but life is good and I had a good sail in the bay. icon_cool
