Looking for Cat Sailors Around Beaumont, TX  Bottom

  • I decided my 11 year old son needs a little excitement in his life, and I couldn't see myself on a mono hull yet. So,I just purchased a Prindle 19 after a layoff from sailing since 1982. My first boat was a Prindle 16 and I later moved up to a Hobie 18. I am searching for local interested cat sailors that I can learn about where to sail, local clubs if any and I need help learning about my new boat.

    Thanks

    Phil

  • prindle 19s are pretty mean boats, one of the faster boats in the "dead boat society"...especially when they are MX'ed icon_biggrin

Curious if this boat was purchased in/around dallas? I recall seeing one a week or two ago for sale.. had a blue stripe from bow to stern on the hulls.

I would suggest doing a very good look over the standing rigging before sailing, possibly even replace it all before you take it out.

Here is a thing someone told me to check out
harrymurpheyOn the Pre 89' P19's they had no internal sub-decks at and in front of the front crossbar .... after 89' is when I believe they started installing sub-decks to stiffen the bows up. What you want to do is rub the flat palm of your hand on the inboard side of the hull just in front of the front crossbar ... feel for any waves/wripples ... if you find any that means the hulls have been "working" .... that is something you DON'T want to find .....

Check the front crossbar at the point that the dolphin-striker ends ... this is just at the in-board side of the hull. Look for any small cracks ... if any are found it means the crossbar is flexing up and down ... NOT GOOD .... when my front crossbar failed I found a used one ... and cut 18" pieces out of the old one ... cut the "luff-track out , making a "C" ... then I drove this "C" section inside the replacement crossbar to add extra strength/stiffness ... (an idea borrowed from a early "Nacra" fix since they suffered from the same issue ....)

Check the rudder blades ..... Performance Catamaran made upgraded longer eliptical tipped rudder blades ... since when you were on a screaming reach the OEM short squareblades were too short ... the bows drove down/the sterns rose up .... and all of a sudden you had no steering ... you could wiggle the helm back and forth ... but to no effect .... Sometimes the older longer P18 OEM Blades were retro-fitted since they could be found used for cheap ....

If you do have an older model with no sub decks/bulkheads forward of the front crossbar, you may want to consider a N6.0NA bowfoil to help stiffen the bows some.

Since you are sailing with your 11 year old son, i have to ask what y'alls combined weight is? If it is around/below 325lb you guys are in for a fun ride in 10+ knot winds icon_cool

There is quite a cat group around "surfside beach", i think they have their own facebook group if you are into that.

  • Beaumont group is at Port Arthur YC at Pleasure Island. Nice gang of folks. They stay in touch via the Texas City Dike gang's website sometimes www.tcdyc.com. Ricky Richardson is the contact, secretary at payc.us

Surfside Beach is at Galveston Island, a bit of a trip for you.
  • Thanks for the quick reply and good advice. After an inspection of the above mentioned items, I am impressed with the condition of this boat including all rigging which has been replaced recently. It looks to have been a freshwater boat that was maintained and sailed properly. It does need a few small blocks on the trap system as the current blocks have broken and chipped rollers. This is the boat from Dallas. I originally made a deal on a Supercat 20 in Comfort TX but after the 6 hour drive to get it, I found it was missing too many big parts which would end up costing too much to replace. I think the Prindle is a better boat for my son and I. Our combined weight is around 335, I am concerned about righting this cat if flipped. I am researching the bowfoil.. thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the link on Surfside, it would be a great weekend trip due to the 2.5 hour drive. I am wondering if Lake Charles LA has cat sailors as I see boats on the lake when crossing the I10 bridge.
  • You will be fine trying to right the boat with 335lb. I have righted mine with about 310-320.
  • Seabrook Sailing Club has a bunch of cats, maybe 20, but no P19s. There are P16s, Hobie 20's, 18's, 16's, a 14, Waves, Getaways, and several Nacras. They are half way between Houston and Galveston, on Galveston Bay.
